European Delivery Nine Years Ago Today...
My wife and I took European Delivery of our 1M nine years ago today. Getting an allocation was like winning the lottery. The timing was terrible (my wife gave birth to our seventh child two months before our trip and our oldest was only 11), but against all common sense and practical considerations, we went through with it. I still remember standing in my front yard getting ready to leave to coach my son's football practice when I got a phone call from the dealer who let me know they had an allocation for us.
We didn't really have the disposable income for anything approaching the 1M, but we were optimistic the education I was blessed to get would open up the needed financial doors or -- worst case scenario -- we'd sell the car for close to what we paid for it. I never posted a full European Delivery trip report (maybe for our ten year 1M anniversary?). There have been a lot of ups and downs since then and the memories and photos of that European Delivery trip remain. So glad we were able to do it and that we still have our 1M after all these years. Our first (and only, so far) trip to Europe Marienplatz in Munich Nine years ago today. Delivery! We left our 1M overnight in the BMW Welt garage and seeing our car the next morning was pretty special My wife with some cattle near Neuschwanstein Castle Obligatory Neuschwanstein Castle shots Street parking in Karlsruhe Berchtesgaden Last day of a short, but amazing trip Drop-off at Loginout |

Nice, dream trip including dream car; well done you.
Haven’t compiled a ED photo collection Yet and i did ///M Garching instead of the more pittoresk and historic local classics. Equally great memories though. |

These are great pictures and quite a trip down memory lane.
Pretty amazing (sobering?) to reminisce about how different our life circumstances were almost a decade ago. Your shots of the car in the Welt remind me of when I took a road trip to the dealer that sold me the 1M. They were finishing the prep on the car when I arrived, but the CA asked me "Do you want to come look at it before they bring it out front?" Up until that point, like many of us, I had not yet seen it in the actual flesh. When I walked around the corner and saw it sitting there, I had a tremendous visceral reaction (joy? excitement? OMG?) ... it looked wayyyy better than I had imagined. And, like many of us, I still spend quite a bit of time looking back at it after it has been parked, even to this day. Thank you for sharing these pictures. |

Fantastic post. It's great you had the fortitude to take the trip and experience European delivery of your 1M. And have continuous ownership of such a special BMW today. Congrats

I'm jealous as hell as are many here. The trip, the car, it'll be a highlight in your life FOREVER.
Not ED, but did drive a rental Renault to Neuschwanstein and Berchtesgaden {Alpenstrasse} in March 2017. |

Not Charming
Very envious.
My 1M came to me at 3.5 years of age, from Canada, on a car carrier, to Boise, Idaho. Here is my first picture of the vehicle, in the garage of a house that I once shared with my business partner:

Nice post; fond memories brought back for me. Got to take my VO to Frankfurt Auto Show (BMW featured our car) after the check-in clerk at boutique hotel in Munich came out to the lot and announced "the perfect car!" From Frankfurt to the Nordschliefe where an Aussie, stunned at getting to drive my car, gave me his ticket for M-Taxi (M3 hurled around by Walter Haupt, development engineer for M-gruppe) and then a quieter lap on my green engine. Finished with visit to Trier and childhood home of none other than that craze econ, Karl Marx.
PS Make a note; seven kids! Your name can never appear in the same sentence with common sense, but hope you are enjoying them all now. |
