The problem is finding a rim like that. I think a couple of companies specifically made setups for us. You'd need something like a 17x11 et60. Tell us when you find something in that range and we'll tell you if we think it will work. I also assume you might be talking about a tire that runs wide like a drag radial, that will make it even harder. If you ran a tire that runs small like a Toyo or Falken you could sorta make it work with something like a 17x10 et55.

Under the staggered setups, apex says you can get a 275 to fit in the back on a 9.5" wheel. Is that optimal wheel width for the tire width, probably not, but apparently it can be done.

Ideally when sizing a wheel for a given tire you want the wheel to be the same width as the tire’s tread width or ~0.5” wider. A small amount of stretch preloads the tire and allows for better steering response. I run a Toyo 275 up front on a 10.5" wheel. The tread width on the 275 R888R is 10.5", I could also run the 265 with a tread width of 10.1" and get a little stretch on the front which may help steering response.
If you're just going for looks you can stuff a 275 on a 9.5", but it will have a negative impact on handling and would probably rub anyway.

I'm thinking he's going for drag racing type fitment (since he mentioned brake swap for smaller wheels), and in that case a 275 on the 9.5 actually might give a bit more flex during launch and be beneficial. I have no idea what kind of power you need for sidewall flex to come into play, so I could just be talking out my ass. |

Apex makes a 17x9 ET52 that you could stuff a 275/40-17 tire on but it's far from ideal. That 6mm difference in offset would shove the tire about a 1/4" closer to the fender lip and you would probably need to roll it to avoid cutting the tire.

Oh, I missed that you want to use a 17" rim. Diameter doesn't affect the offset, so you just need to find a 17x9.5" wheel with 58mm offset like your 18s. It'll put the tire in the same spot as you have it now.
If you can find a higher offset wheel that'll keep it away from the fender but it really depends on how much room you have in there, sounds like you are pushing the limits of the space.
