My 1M3 track toy.
I picked this car up about 6 months ago to turn from a really great street car into a REALLY fun track toy. I am by no means a competitive racer, and I'm even less committed at keeping up with build threads... You've been warned.
If you've been online for a while you might've seen this car on Built for Backroads... Ironically, the car is somewhat 'related' to my E91, shown in the last photo. That car can be viewed at the link below: https://www.builtforbackroads.com/li...-328i-n54-swap Anyway, I saw all of the great threads of everyone detailing their builds, and figured I'd do the same. I'm just getting started so feel free to read along. The Car 2013 135i, M-Sport Carbon Black/black interior S65 4.0 V8, DCT (E9x M3 GWS) Full M3 running gear including driveline, subframes, brakes, suspension, etc. Mods -Style 313 wheels (18") -M2 Comp heated seats -Dinan E82 135i exhaust (custom 2-1 midpipe) -do88 Aluminum radiator -Ohlins 'Dedicated Track' Coilovers (Vorschlag camber plates, Swift springs) -Turner Tracksport E9x M3 2 piece rotors -Goodridge SS brake lines -PFC 11 brake pads -Hard Brakes titanium pad backing plates -Castrol SRF fluid Ready to install Apex SM-10 wheels, 18x8.5 ET35 square Kumho V730 tires, 255/35-18 square I'll try to keep up with this, and I love reading everyone else's threads for ideas and inspiration!

Awesome to see an S65 swapped E82 getting tracked. Definitely curious how well that wheel/tire combo clears everything, seems like a pretty aggressive wheel setup for non-stretched tires.

OP, I'm curious what you did about the oil cooler. I've seen 1M clones swapped that say it fits but I could not get the M3 oil cooler to fit behind the 135 bumper no matter what. I ended up having to make a custom solution.

Man, SM10s look fantastic on these cars, that's awesome.
OP and AMG, how is the power delivery with just running a 245/255 in the rear? Do you have to feather the throttle coming out of a corner to make sure the rear end doesn't step out too much? Have you considered going to a staggered setup to get a 265 or 275 in the rear?

Never considered not running square. The ability to rotate is way too valuable for a track car. Although I will say my car wears tires extremely evenly front to back. Last edited by amg6975; 09-07-2023 at 02:09 PM.. |

That's really interesting, like you say, the lower torque of the S65 and linear power delivery probably makes it very manageable. That's super cool. I totally agree that you need to be able to run a square set up at the track to really get the most life out of the tires.
255 V730s are what I'm currently running, coming from RT660s, I like them a lot. The sidewalls are much stiffer and I prefer that feedback over the 660s. I think you'll enjoy them.

Interesting. I have a set of Supercar 3Rs on order but I don't know if TireRack will get them before I need them so I'm trying to come up with a plan B. I ran the RT660 before the Continental and really liked them but was looking for something a step above those. I was thinking RE71RS but they can only tolerate a couple laps before overheating which I hate. V730 on the short list of options.

When I first got the V730s installed I didn't think they had the outright pace of the RT660 but since then I've been resetting my personal best at each track I've been to, maybe just adapting to the driving style this tire needs? The feel of the V730 is similar to the RE71R I had prior to the RT660 and they last an entire 25min session without getting greasy. I really like them.

And you simply cannot beat the price point. They’re obscenely inexpensive.

Finally an update... There have been a lot, so I'll just make a few posts about what I've been up to. Since my last post, I've had the car at Daytona, Sebring, and Homestead. 4 track days in the last few months... A few upgrades...
First up, new wheels/tires. As mentioned above, a square set of 18x8.5" Apex SM-10 and Kumho V730s, 255/35-18. While I was doing this, I also installed a set of Bimmerworld bulletnose "race" studs. Everything fit perfectly, did a few more tweaks to the coilovers, but otherwise super happy with them. I do find them getting a little slippery now, but I think its likely due to them having 4 days on them already. I'd like to do some fender pulling as well and see if I can squeeze a 9" wheel and a 265 on there. We shall see.

Next up was to start tackling some DCT overheat issues. So, I opted for the do88 DCT cooler, a fantastic upgrade. Of course, the carbon duct that comes with it is intended for the E9x M3, so it doesn't fit our front bumper. I managed just fine without it, no more DCT temp issues.

Nest up was a healthy interior upgrade. After running Daytona and seeing the speed attained on the banks, and then hearing of a fatality there a few weeks after, I realized I need some safety upgrades. So, I did a rollbar from Streetbully Fabrication (look him up on Instagram), Sparco QRT-C-X seats, VAC hard mounts, Sparco QRT side rails, and OMP Versa 2 6-point harnesses. The install of all of it was great, no issues to speak of.
While I was doing this, I did some electronics as well. Nothing crazy, but I ran a few long USB-C cords for GoPro power (passenger side upper windshield corner and another on the rollbar up top), and also installed a Garmin Catalyst. For those of you that haven't used one, it is a fantastic tool! Here's a few photos...

Yes, I actually just saw you were using it as well, its such a great upgrade! I still have to upgrade the engine oil cooler, but I'm using the factory E9x M3 cooler, and the do88 upgrade won't fit. Likely going to set up a custom cooler from Setrab at some point.
