I have heard the n51 can put out as much hp as the n52, but idk, bit skeptical I guess. Is the n51 factory tune just that bad for emissions sake? if one can add a 3SI and tune to an n52 to get x more hp , it would then stand to reason one could get more HP or equal to N52 with 3Si with a tune, however the n51 already has a 3 stage, so that is not adding up for me. Input very much appreciated as I have passed on some nice cars already.

The factory tune is BAD. A simple tune will gain you 20 pounds of torque and 15 horsepower in the midrange. |

Here is a good, short read that may lead you down the internet rabbit hole. |

For the record, I have 65k miles on my N51 and other than a few preventative items and some upgrades, it has been solid. No repairs or breakdowns to this point. It is a limited, summer only weekend driver though. |

Just over 88K on my N51, 12 of which are mine with two owners before that. No problems in my 12K, and while the OFHG was replaced by a previous owner, that particular issue shared with the N52.
The N51/2 engines both have a very solid reputation. Can't speak to the previous owners' behaviour—and it didn't come with much in the way of maintenance records—but mine's a daily driver and apart from not revving beyond 3K until it's warmed up*, I don't baby it in any way. *: Or, rather, when I feel like it's properly warmed up. No (stock) way to tell for sure. Thanks, BMW. |

One of the reasons , I purchased the 128 was the rep of the engine, and honestly, the one is an overlooked platform, which imho handles well, relatively lightweight, ( by todays standards) , easy to work on. Revs great, reminds me of a e30 M3 and e36 M3 if they were one car. I have had quite a few very nice cars as you can see by my sig, and I just love this car.
