F8X rear suspension on E8X/E9X
Let's talk F8X rear suspension for E8X/E9X.
-Pros- nice bolt on hubs with 14mm holes for studs. M4 370mm brakes The aluminum knuckle knocks 5 pounds off the unsprung weight. The lower control arm is identical in length to the E9X M3 version other than the cam adjuster being on the knuckle end instead of the subframe end. Bolts to Non-M or M subframes using F8X Ft and Rr upper control arms and F8X or E9X M lower control arms. -Downside is it would need axle spacers and different/custom? Trailing arms and toe links. There's probably an aftermarket solution but I haven't looked hard yet. Also it adds about 1.25" to the track width on each side so it would likely be a solution only for 1M or wide body cars. Wheel choice, not sure if M2 wheel offset would work? Needs longer F8X rear brake lines Aftermarket adjustable toe links for E9X non-M fit but require trimming or shorter misalignment spacers on the knuckle end. Thoughts? |

Arms will be tricky part. If adding another 1+" track width over nonM E82 that's massively undesirable

I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze here. I have heard that F8x cars suffer rear wheel bearing failures much sooner than E8x/E9x. Rear subframe would be nice though.

The other factor will be electronics. I know the CAN system for F8x cars is different and non-compatible with E8x/E9x CAN system. Need to know if the wheel speed sensor is compatible or retrofit-able somehow for ABS/MDM.

I'm assuming it'll work, both models have the tone ring built into the wheel bearing if I remember correctly. I know the sensors mount different, f8x from the side, e9x from the rear. I'll be sure to tackle that question.

I'm also not sure there is a setting for 370mm rear brakes in DSC (MK60) module, but setting to GTS would probably be close enough. If the pulse/tone rings are same diameter and tooth count, and the E8x/E9x sensor will fit in the F8x mounting, that would be swell.

So I looked at all of the wheel sensors I have, and I have the following:
128i E9x M3 F8x M The dirty pic is of the 128i sensor and it won't work at all. The E9x M3 and F8x M sensors look and mount identically on the sensor end. Really the only difference I can find is the connector. And the E9x M version plugs right in to my 128i harness. They are both 2 wire sensors and I can't think of a reason they wouldn't be interchangeable. |

This Wisefab E9X trailing arm should work. It's a replacement piece from their full kit. I'll just have to lengthen the tube portion and change the heim joint to a 12mm or 14mm hole with the right width misalignment bushings. This comes with a 10mm hole and the bolt won't fit through. They won't sell just the little fabbed piece by itself.
I'm open to other options here if anyone knows of any off the shelf arms that would fit. Attached a drawing of the measurements. |

I had to buy these 5/8 to 12mm misalignment spacers for the spindle end of the Turner toe arms which left me with these extra spacers. Just pop out the spacers that came with the heim on the Wisefab arms and toss them. Then trim the red section of the extra Turner spacers so that the total length of each is 16mm. Perfect fit! Now all I need to do is cut and extend the arm or make a longer one.

Looking at the profile view of the F8x hub, it does look like the design would impart more load on the wheel bearing than E8x/E9x. If several of the arms are equal length, then the resulting difference in wheel offsets might come from the hub setup. Can you confirm? Last edited by PRTSB1M; 06-13-2023 at 11:18 AM.. |

Fits pretty tight with 19x11 et44 wheels. I might get some adjustable upper links to try to bring it in some. This is with BDC rear fenders that are the thinner of the sets they offer.
