E82 Water Pump issues
So I have a 2008 135i and I’m chasing a cooling issue. It started shortly after I installed a relocated inlet set, I tried the water pump test (heat on low 10 second pedal one) and I’m getting nothing squirting into the reservoir. So I switched my pump out and thermostat but still nothing, the I changed the buss fuse on top of the battery in the power distribution box but that didn’t work either. I can hear the pump turn on but there’s nothing happening in the reservoir, is there a fuse I’m missing of could it be to much air in the lines? I’m at a loss any help or thoughts would be great.

My mistake, I meant to say I put the heat on high fan on low and held down the accelerator for 10+ seconds. I did that both with the reservoir cap on and then with it off after filling the coolant until the float was in the desired position. I let it run for a few minutes both ways with no success.

Hi, just wondering have you managed to resolve this? I am having the same issue, with code 2E84 (electrical water pump communication issue).. I have tested fuses in the glove compartment and the distribution block voltage. All seems to work fine.
It seems that the pump works intermittently, as I was able to bleed it a couple of days ago when I was trying to test it, but today it didn’t start the the bleeding process at all. I have also noticed that my AC blows cold water when set to warm even after having warmed up the engine.. am worried to drive the car and risk overheating.. Looking at other posts it seems to have mixed opinions on this issue Any tips and clues would be greatly appreciated Thanks Maj |

Same as how mine was when it went. The electronics built into the pump itself are at fault. Time to replace it.

See this as a “friendly warning “. Time for a new water pump. This happened to me a few months ago on my E90. Thank your car for being nice to you hehe 😜 |

Thank you both for getting back to me!
That’s a nice way of looking at it! I hope changing the water pump won’t cost me a fortune! Any idea how much would that be at the dealership (UK based)? Or if is it easy to DIY it? I typically try to do it myself but since pump is placed in a very tight position I am worried I won’t be able to carry it out at home. Also if it’s worth getting a second hand pump as they go for very cheap online? As much as I like my car, but it hasn’t been nice to me since I got it, not to mention the N43 engine under the hood and it’s infamous injection and misfiring problems…. |

This is the DIY I used. I added some notes at the end as well. It's a pain in the butt. It's certainly DIY do-able but you'll want to have some experience working on cars even if it's just stuff like brakes or suspension. If you have no experience at all or no tools or place to work on it, you may want to bring it to a shop. Unfortunately don't be surprised if it's $1500 - 2000 USD converted to Pounds. |

I think when I had mine done it was around $1100 which was a few years ago. So I suspect the $1500 estimate by tracer is a good approximation.
As to buying a used water pump from eBay, just don't. It's just not worth it with the spotty reliability of these water pumps. You don't want to waste your time installing a used pump to find it to be junk immediately or have it fail shortly after. No shop will install a used part you supply as they don't want the headaches. Even new water pumps can fail out of the box. It did with mine. New OE water pump installed by the dealer to fail when I got my car home. Had to get my car towed back to the dealer where they installed another new water pump which has held up. |

In my case I had my buddy do this job for me. I know my FYI linits ☝️☺️. He has changed 2 water pumps now in my E90. Paid $350 for his time. Parts about $400 including antifreeze and thermostat from FCP Euro.

Thanks to everyone commenting on here and for the great feedback and advice.
I ended up taking it to the dealership, they quoted me £730 for the water pump part + labor, as well as £180 cost for diagnosis. I probably would’ve been able to DIY it but having done so much work on it already I just felt drained and didn’t want to risk it as it seems a little outside my current capabilities if am being honest. I hope this nightmare ends soon and am starting to consider giving up on BMWs all in all and go back to owning a good old Toyota instead or maybe a Golf VW to avoid this mess moving forward. |

Probably the same or worse.
For what it's worth these cars have a handful of issues that are somewhat predictable, and outside of those it's actually a pretty reliable car. Water pump gets almost everyone, and beyond that you may have a few oil leaks and that's really about it. Almost anything else is considered maintenance and applies to almost every car on the planet (brakes and such). |
