Clear head lights? Perhaps an easy answer...
I am currently in the process of parting my car and getting ready to sell it to purchase a 135i and was looking around and noticed some of the 135's have clears and others dont...
what makes the difference? Is it the sports package? Thanks...pardon the newbness...i'm trying my best to research as much before I jump into this... |

There is no way that you can order them from BMW NA. They make the car illegal in US and Canada. You will have to spec them out of Europe. Expect to pay $1,000 each or so we've been told. The whole headlamp unit has to be replaced. There is no way to remove just the amber.

Has anyone tried baking the lights yet or taking a heat gun to them? Subie guys do this all the time and I've also seen a couple on the e90post do it. It is risky yes, but are you will to dish out 2k+?

I don't think anyone has tried baking the headlight yet. I think most of us are waiting for someone to bake it without breaking the Adaptive headlight motor or any other moving parts. I sure don't have that kind of cash to purchase a new headlight(s). If someone has the balls to bake it and remove the amber light w/o any problems... i give you BIG props. But if you break something along the way you might want to call the below number for a replacement. Good luck and let us know if you decide to do it.

NHTSA requires amber reflectors on the front corners of all US spec cars. For cars that have clear blinkers, like the M3, they have to put amber reflectors elsewhere on the front corners.
Btw, even if somebody manages to not break their sealed headlamp unit while baking it, once you remove the amber piece and glue it back together, the bulb will be exposed. The clear dorner headlights have a clear reflector where ours have the amber piece, so it will probably look pretty unfinished. |

Just to amplify a bit on what Larry said, the word 'reflector' is the key to understanding the issue. It has to reflect back amber when illuminated externally (from another car for instance). Just having an orange bulb in a clear cover won't cut it since DOT/NHTSA is looking at this as a 'reflector', not an internally illuminated device.

Yeah I know its suppose to be a reflector, but people are trying to cover them up anyways, or remove them from the sides of the 3 coupe. And even if you did break the headlight assembly while baking it, and you were considering the buy for a euro set, well you'll just have to end up buying them then.

Bad idea! It would be a big mistake to buy them, because they are setup to work with driving with the fog-line being one the left, instead of on the right side like here in the US. On the upgraded headlights, the adaptive lighting feature would work ass backwards as well.

I have JDM headlights in a car of mine right now, and they suck. While they may look cool from the outside, from the drives seat they suck. Now I wish I had just opened them and painted them, to keep them working the way they were intended.
