Sticky oily crap on my hood....
don't know where it came from or what it is.... it looks as though it seeped out from right above the headlights on both sides... and then kind of blew up the hood a good 6-8 inches before it got dry enough to stop...
Since its been there for at least a week it has now accumulated a bunch of that wonderful LA nastyness that hangs in the air here and I'm sure has a fair amount of abrasive particulate in it. I need to remove it, but obviously don't want to "rub" at it with a cleaner because i don't want to scratch the clear-coat on my 1 week old jett black hood. As far as consistency goes, just think of it as motor oil that has dried up and left a bit of residue. anyone have any idea what I can use to take this off that won't damage my paint?? |

This is the residual protective wax layer from your car during delivery. Wash it off with car wash and hot water. It will wash away completely over time:

I just noticed this last week. I have had the car Since July 15. You would think it would have shown up before this. The rain seemed to have brought it out. That might be why it has not shown up earlier.
But, is exactly as described by Feyd. |

I had exactly the same problem and before I knew what it was, I took my car back to the dealer and he told me that's what it was. He had their detailer come out and remove it and buff it out. Since then some more has blown up from under the edge of the hood above the headlights and I was able to remove it myself using Armor All Car wash solution. It looks ugly, but it won't harm the paint. As the guy who started the thread noted, it attracts dust and dirt and starts looking pretty bad after awhile. The actual cosmoline itself is clear, sort of like Vaseline.

I had something similar and it was hard and crusty, like dried up oil. I had to use a fingernail to get it off. I did ED so not sure why it would be on there... maybe they do this to ed cars too?

Had the same thing. Dealer said their detailer went a bit overboard on the silicon engine coating. Kindly asked that they remove it and detail hood. My wife took it in, was done in minutes.
If you're dealer is nearby, don't waste your own time and effort. It's a new car, have them fix it. |

I had some on my rocker panel at the lowest spot. I used some clay and waxed it up and it was good. However...I that was in May and I have had to do it twice since then. I tried doing the underside of the door (incase that was were the cosmoline was coming from) but that didn't help. It isn't a big issue just a 5 minute clean job.

the 1 is at the dealer getting detailed as I type this...
thanks for all the info/help guys. I really appreciate the activity in this forum and I'm looking forward to making it a point to be on here every day. I origionally came from VWVortex (great forum) and was over on zpost/z4-forum, etc when I had the Z4. Honestly I was a bit bummed at how boring the Z4 forums were... anyway, glad to be here. |

This stuff comes from a few small holes on the underside of the hood. When it gets hot it melts out. I tried cleaning it out but you really cant get in there, so its just a matter of it all melting and getting wiped off. Ill post up pics later if I remember.
