Took car back to the dealer today..
So, after having the car for <1 month, the service and warning lights started coming on after startup.
Although it's a 4 yr old car, it's only done 7350km; surely it can't need a service already? There is a service receipt from Midas in the logbook at 6850km... what does it all mean? The dealer (Prestige World Cars, not BMW) said they would look at it and have it serviced if necessary by "their guy" who has all the equipment and can do it for 1/2 the price that BMW will service it. I think I will call them tomorrow and tell them that I have an issue with buying a car for $30+K (albeit 4 yrs old) and having to straignt-away take it for a service. Has anyone come across anything like this? |

The car will call for a brake fluid service every 2 years from the date of manufacture no matter how many Km's traveled. There are other service requirements that are time related also.

Midas probably didn't have the equipment to reset the service log. I think the computer calculates when service is due based not only on how you drive the car and distance travelled, but also how long since your last service. As your car is 4 years old, the computer probably thinks it time for one.

Just take into your local BMW dealer and have them reset the service indicators for you..
At least then you will have peace of mind that BMW reset it correctly and not some side bar auto shop that Prestige World cars might use.. |

Can reseting the oil/annual service lights be done the same way it can with old BMWs, by shorting out the relevant pins on the service connector socket for a few seconds with the ignition turned on? I think it used to be pins 7 & 19.

It went in for a service a couple of weeks ago, and already tells me the next is 12000km away. That's just how it works out. As mentioned things come up on distance or time, and for yours it would all be time based. |

On a happier note, my service intervals on the diesel are 30,000kms. So that'll be 27,500 kms to go... hopefully.

1ers can have the service interval indicator reset in the car under certain circumstances.....no need to short anything out!

Indeed you did. When I bought it there were 6850 kms on the clock.
I'm not sure what the story is but the woman who owned it before me traveled overseas alot. I assume she also lived close to her work and drove short distances, hence the corrosion on the muffler tip. Regardless, $33K for a car in that condition seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up. As for the other comments, thanks everyone. Maybe I should take it to Bib Stillwell (300m from my house) and get the 10000km service done anyway? That way they can fix any other issues that may have arisen in the last 4 yrs. |

Slightly off topic: In the trade, having someone other than the manufacturer service the car is what they refer to as having a tom, dick & harry book. Valuers frown on this especially with BMW's. Don't ever trade it if you take it somewhere else to service it, sell it privately. You might get a better deal on servicing while you own it but it will be worth less as a trade down the line. It's all relative in the end. Get someone who knows what they're doing to handle your pride & joy.

So I got the car back today and it doesn't look like anything had been done. Although the dealer reckons his guy did a service, the brakes still squeal, the handbrake only works in the full up position, the lenses are still not aligned properly and the internal rear reading lights won't work dispite new globes.
Needless to say, I won't be paying anything, especially since the Service Warning Light still comes on. In addition, the service book wasn't even filled out. I don't believe that anything was done, especially since the last service (3 months ago - before I bought it) was 800 km ago, and they did oil, filter, and checks of fluid and brakes (but clearly not well enough). If the dealer reckons their guy changed those again (so soon) then he must be some sort of muppet! Looks like I'm going to have to take it to BMW and blow $600 for a 10K km service when we get back from our drive to Lorne (1 yr anniversary getaway tomorrow). At least then they can fix the stuff under the extended New Car Warranty, and I will have somne peace of mind. Thanks for everyone's helpful advice. |
