Are the BMW intake and exhaust worth the money?
I'm looking to get both, not just one, but is it worth the money for maybe 10 extra hp? I think it should cost around $2000 for the upgrade. I'm not interested in getting "aftermarket" (non BMW) parts. The warranty has to stay in place.

It's more gonna be a decision based on the sound that you want out of the car rather than increasing performance from what I have read from others.
Personally, I want a louder exhaust, but want to stay under warranty as you have said. So once money frees up, I'll probably go for the performance exhaust.

I've heard the intake doesn't add much sound at all.
Horse power gains are minimal Dollars to horsepower rate are pretty bad i'd go for DCI.

I have both on my 130i and very pleased with both.
I have a write up on the intake here - http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=298593 Also a video here, albeit in dutch, of a 125i with all the BMW Performance parts to give you a sample of the sound http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/11/16/vi...-parts-review/

They are excellent products but IMO, for the price, you can get a better performing and sounding aftermarket setup. I decided to go with the RR cat back exhaust and aFe intake.

just save your old parts and when you need to do service replace the original parts, that way you can buy aftermarket bmw products. thats what i tell my friends to do and it works for them.

I have both and I like mine a lot. HP gains vs. cost is not really there. However, if you want OEM fit and finish, nice sound and a bit nicer rpm climb without losing the warranty, its worth it in my opinion. The car feels much better after 3k RPMS.

I have the performance intake and trust me the difference was worth it. It's not a significant HP gain, but that's not what it's about. The real gain is the more robust torque curve. You simply feel the power across a wider range of the RPM band.
Prior to the intake, I could only feel the pull from around 2500 - maybe 5000. After the performance intake, I feel the torque pull well after 5000 rpm. I did my first autocross a few weeks ago and ran the entire course in 2nd. The power was always there when it was needed. If you're just looking for sound though, you probably should look for something else. |

No sense spending $2k + labor for 10hp performance gain, you might as well trade up to a 135
As for the sound, I have 3 simple words: golf tee mod. Cheapest and easiest way to make your 128 louder and meaner |

The 135i is certainly a great car with power and torque that the NA engines simply can't match. The thing I did not like about the 135i was the throttle response and turbo lag and this is very noticeable and is night and day different to my 130i. This for me really does remove from the whole driving experience and gives the engine a slightly lazy character. I have now made the decision to keep my 130i and spend some goodies to improve what is already a great package which included the exhaust and intake. I'm very close to making my car the way I want it now and I'm really loving driving this car every time I get into it and part of that is the subjective feel you get from the sound from these 2 items. If you want outright power, I agree get a 135i but don't think that the driving experience will be a better one.... I just think it's a different one

They both make a nicer sound, especially the exhaust... they give the car a clean, sleek BMW-finished look. However, if you're searching for power, I'll be dead honest. BMW Performance is not the way to go, nor is Dinan. When you buy BMW Performance you're getting guaranteed fitment, OEM fit and finish, warranty, and the BMW brand name.

I am not looking to increase my performance to 135 specs, or even close to that. I'm willing to spend up to $2000 on parts/labor, but they are going to have to be BMW or Dinan. The only people that I would let install them are the dealer. My BMW dealer is an authorized Dinan dealer. I'm not a racer, I would never bring my car to a track, nor would I race anyone on the street. But I would be willing to have a deeper note and a slight increase in hp.
I guess my best bet is to wait as see what Dinan has to offer the 128. If they don't produce anything I'll just go the BMW route. |

^ I'm waiting on Dinan for my 128i too. I've been very happy with their products in the past but if they don't start producing products soon I'll probably do the BMW performance route too. I'm not willing to go with other companies because I don't want to risk voiding my warrenty.

I read in the BMW website for accessories that the air intake adds 3 (yes, three) hp. It supposedly changes engine sound but not significantly. And it costs US$988. You do the math...

Someone did a dyno before and after for both BMWP exhaust and intake and the gains aren't great.
There is a little more gain in the lower and midrange, 26Nm torque @ 1500 revs. For a NA engine it's the law of diminishing returns.....

The performance exhaust is worth it for the sound alone.
Im not to sure about spending 1K+ on an intake tho. |
