Spotted: 1-series supersport lightweight / competition model?!
As reported on 1addicts Homepage.
Hi Guys, this photos where shot yesterday in Garching (M devision is located there in Germany). Seems BMW is testing a stronger 1 series. Interesting are the back brakes. They are not the performance one, but look more like the brake of the E46 M3 CSL / Z4M It also had a carbon fiber roof, vented and cross drilled brake discs. EDIT: We are looking at either an M1 (unlikely) or the rumored 1-series supersport (similar to the BMW M3 CSL) - a 1-series utilizing lightweight materials and specific options aimed at the enthusiast, which are not within the BMW Performance catalog. I'm pretty sure i've seen it mentioned that since there will not be a new M Z4, that the designation of M coupe would fall on the 1-series. So seeing this isn't much of a surprise to me. I think the rumors for it were a I4TT. Though the car doesn't seem to be wearing enough camo for a full on M mule. Perhaps this is just a focused test.

Crazy. I hope it's true. Don't really want an x-drive, way too much weight. Bring on the carbon roof. If the carbon and light materials could offset the weight of the AWD I could be game.

I think there will be wider fenders front and rear as the offsets on the front tires are really low. This might indeed be a 1-series M car.

hmmm.. looks like the makings of a $60k 1er.
I do like the wide-body look, but I'd want to see some specs before I could comment any further. Its funny though it looks like they just sawz-all'd the fenders out and then hastily put some trim back on. I'd say if they are doing anything it looks more like they are testing a drive train. x-drive perhaps? You can still see the intercooler behind the front bumper so whatever it is looks like its still a turbo motor... Anyone have any clue as to why they might have taped up the headlight washer nozzles on the bumper? Looks like they removed the actual washer nozzles (no bump). Weird. |

I'm not sure if this is actually a 1 Series variant, or if they're just testing some equipment that's going on a shared chassis.
It's certainly interesting, but it's hard to imagine the car making it to production with rear tires that much wider than the normal ones. |

Not that this really adds to the discussion, but it kills me that they take the effort to mask the roundel on the hood, but leave the "LOOK AT ME I'M A BMW" kidneys exposed and unadulterated . . .

maybe the chassis is already adapted, different suspension, different wishbones etc, differential in the back, and the just put the normal body on top. Really curious what this will be.
On the German M forum it is stated that the engine will not be a NA straight 6. So I guess a N54 with some more horses. There are speculations that there will come a Z4 40Sdrive version, which would have a more powerful N54 with around 340HP.. This could be an option.. |

Some are claiming it was probably a 1series equipped with x-drive.
Why for heaven-sake would it also have a CF roof, vented and cross drilled brake discs and ultra low profile rubber and wheels from an M3 CSL. This has all the making of an M1 test mule. Question is, what's the engine? |

It would have to be an M engine. I'm sure it would have to be turbocharged. The purists would cry if it's an N54
Look for this to hit the streets along with the turbo'd M3...to keep things fair.

I wonder if it might include that rumored turbocharged four cylinder that was being talked about earlier in the year for the 1er "super sport"?
