Problems with factory iPod Y Cable
I always leave the Y cable plugged into both the car's usb / aux connection. Whenever I reconnect my iPhone it doesn't pick up the phone untill i disconnect the USB and reconnect it again. I notice however, if say i turn my car off and leave the phone plugged in and come back later and turn on the car it will pick up the phone. However, if i connect the phone myself, i always have to disconnect and reconnect the USB. Anyone else having this problem? This has been like this since the 1st day i took delivery of the car. It's a 2010 135i btw.

I have 2009 pro sat nav (HD) and iPhone 3G (not s) and it works fine apart form the message (something like "this accessory is not designed for iPhone do you want to switch to airplane mode?") and than I choose no and it works fine- both phone and ipod but the cable itself is poorly designed, I had one stolen when they broken into my car and the new one seems to loose the connection when I go over rough surfaces and this is highly annoying! i have to lift the armrest and fiddle with the usb plug for it to work again!

I believe it does charge.... I usually keep my phone plugged into the dock all the time while playing music. I charged it in the morning, plugged it in. Drove 20 minutes and constantly played music. Got out of the car, iPhone was still at 100% battery. I'm must have been charging.

The charging issue seems to vary wire to wire. My iPhone 3g doesn't charge with the Y cable I have. There was talk of a new Y cable, but there is only one part number as far as I know.

The number is 61 12 0 440 812 and only appears on the outer bag. The actual cable still has the 0796 number etched into the cable. However, it is only approved for use on the 3 series, even though the 6FL is exactly same in both the 1 and 3 so you will need to find someone in the parts department that will give it to you for the 1 series even though it is not officially approved for use in the 1. |

I just got an iPhone 3GS and I don't have the problem the OP has. I've had mine since June of '08 and it charges the iPhone just fine.

Does anybody have an iPhone with a cover on it and the smartphone adapter in the armrest? I have a carbon fiber iPhone cover and a 128 with the smartphone adapter on order. I want to know it the iPhone with a cover on it will fit in the adapter or would I have to remove the iPhone from the cover before I put it in the smartphone adapter.

Ya, I never liked having the hassle of plugging/unplugging my iPhone into the connectors under the armrest so I just use an old iPod mini I had sitting around and just leave it in the car plugged in...works perfect!

iphone/ipod USB connection
I have a 2012 128i; my ipod classic hooks up to an Apple USB cable, but does not charge. My iphone 4 hooks up go the USB cable and does charge. Will the Y cable solve the ipod charging issue?

I've had the same problem with the Y-cable and an ipod 3rd gen which I keep in the car all the time.
In short, the Y-cable is poorly engineered and they go bad pretty frequently. I had the dealer replace one under warranty and about 3 months later it was on the fritz again. I wish Monster or a 3rd party company would produce a better one. |
