"The 1er M will be powered by a high-revving, naturally aspirated straight-six producing about 340 hp—and, we are told, a very remarkable exhaust note. Think last-generation M3, and you’re close. Just when we thought exclusive engines were dead, we’re told there will be few ingredients from the corporate parts bin used on the 1-series M."

http://www.caranddriver.com/news/spi...eries_m_-spied

Article dated April 2010.

Would be awesome if it were true and would solve the problem with the m1 being faster than the m3. Seems like a win/win for everyone and would be better than holding the m1 back ala cayman vs 911. Can you comment on this article and the engine speculation specifically Scott? From your previous comments it seems car and driver is just making their information up, but we would love to hear your reaction to the article. Thanks!

In this way it is more understandable why the M1 with only 350 Hp will be more special than a 135i: because it gets its power from a HR NA engine and not a LR FI engine. Would love if BMW M tunes for the M1 the N53 and not the N55.

340 hp normally aspirated would be awesome.

An excellent base to build a race/trackday car also.

Im pretty sure scott was clear that the M1 would have the first iteration of the engine eventually going into the M3, a 6 cylinder turbo of some sort.

I kind of wish a revamped S54 tuned to ~350 hp would get the nod, kinda like Mitsubishi did with the 4G63t when they brought EVO8 to the US. Oldie but goodie engine design from 1990 + new refinements and technology = still kicking ass all over town.

Scott. Will the M1 have an Electronic Damper Control option like the M3?

If this will be the case EDC and if Sat Nav is going to bean option they are likely to add several grand to the price. Wouldn't this be taking the M1 out of the range of affordability?

I hear that the EDC option is a pretty important one to have.

Thanks as always.

Mark.

I do not know what to think about EDC. If I know I am going to keep my M stock, I would take EDC, but I think about putting KW V3 CS or Öhlins, than I would not take EDC.

If M1 comes with EDC, M-Drive, and all of the comfort stuff, won't it be to close to M3?

Hallo.

No I have not forgotten about this thread.
As I have previously been busy the last few weeks , just spending time with the family this weekend.
Will get back to answering over this week. Things are very busy and productive at this time and will be more so over the course of the summer.

Thanks Scott

For you other people?? 340HP ?? 2012 model ..by 2012 honda civics will have that kind of power..anything less than 380 deffinately not worth the money. Subarus..lexus..etc..will all make more power by 2012. Turbo or not, 340 HP?? I wouldn't touch it especially not at the kind of price they talking about...better off buying a 2009/10 M3 will be same price by than or less...think about that.

Dear SCOTT,

I do not know you but you appear to be the M1 authority and even though I have no idea why, I accept it as truth. So, please know that I will buy one of these 135Ms, M1s, 1Ms or whatever the heck it is called - it is meaningless to care - IF I can have most of these:

1) Radio delete
2) A/C delete
3) electric windows and locks delete
4) race seats or something sportier than BMW sport seats with no power
5) cruise control delete

I think you get the picture - I want a 135M or M1 or 1M but only if I can strip it down to a true Tii type option as it will be our third car. That is a lot of talk to simply ask you - will this be possible??? Could I beg the Munich folk in the custom division for this - please? I mean they put Koa wood in a M6 convertible for a guy for goodness sake - YES, I will gladly pay more for the stripped down occasional weekend driver and every now and then track car.

Same here.

Civics with 340 hp, LOL. The Ford Focus RS with 40 less hp already has torque steer issues despite the Quaife LSD. Are BMW customers so concerned that a Civic might offer more hp?

Wasn't meant to be taken literally...lol..but I believe you get the idea. Besides, I hear smart cars will eventually get 350 HP

The majority of customers would forgoe such a concept which is why BMW North America rejected the M3 GTS and 1er GTS.

thanks HondaGoneRogue - this really sucks and I will quit paying attention to this website; again - Dear BMW, I will pay you for a custom Tii to pick up at the Welt. You do this once or twice a year (a custom car for a customer or two you claim); why not get the process started on the 135M for me - PLEASE

You have to be realistic here, no manufacture of this caliber will delete such items if their main opposition offer them as standard, after all this isn't a 2 seater trackday special but a full sized 4 seater coupe.
