This is how an exciting M 6 cylinder should sound that gives the adrenaline rush:

See the massive difference?

It could also be the camera guys, not to mention your computer speakers. I wouldn't bash on it too much until you hear it in person. Cameras and speakers have a tendency to distort exhaust notes.

Where did BMW state this was a modified N54? The X5M/X6M and upcoming M5 will be modified versions of the base cars. Do the SUV's sound different? Yes. Will the M5 sound different? Hell yes. It has been stated that they haven't finalized the sounds.

Update 12/05/10
Seen the car in it's finished production prototype stage late this afternoon. and some new facts , The output cut-off stops at 360PS so look below 360 to estimate the final PS figure,

The Personalisation options will not feature with this generation as it is too late in the cycle to do so, but the next generation 1er will receive the personalisation options. BMW will counter such options with a final ltd run of a GTS M1. Although the standard car will receive usual M appendages such as Carbon Fibre Roof etc.

Car looks mean , standard 5 spoke alloys , or with optional Competition Wheels. The exhaust sound is like a high performance bike , very raspy. On a similar level as the S1000RR Superbike.
When the quad-piped cars hit the track you will be able to hear the full output as sound and exhaust tuning is moving into the forefront of development now.
I am trying to reconcile the exhaust note from the video with this statement from Scott. Was Scott exaggerating by comparing the 1M exhaust note to a superbike? Is the exhaust still a work in progress? Is the sound quality of the video simply poor?

I suspect the exhaust is still evolving as the muffler on the spyshots looks like it has been cobbled together. So I'm still hopeful the production car will offer a more aggresive exhaust note.

I don't think Scott would lie, so I'd be inclined to think that the exhaust is not finished yet.

The car sounds pretty nice on the NRing, but I'd like a bit more.

Sounds good, but sounds like an N55.
Yup Thats the same track where topgear tested those cars. Cant wait to see the final result. Im starting to like this car more than the current m3. It seems more track oriented rather than luxury.

I had repeatedly raised the flag that the first post in the thread is misleading (not to burst the bubble of high-fiving 1-M fans, but just to give a reality check to save people from disappointment later on), the 1-M was getting followed by an M3 GTS. Apparently, not many listened.

Listen closely to the sound from 1:10 - 1:14. If you were as big of an M buff as I am, you can easily tell it was an S65 M3 GTS sound (either dubbed or chasing, I don;t know):

The real sound of the 1-M starts from 1:17 onwards and you can clearly see it does not sound any different than a x35:

The sound you heard in the first spy Nurburgring video was that of a very high-revving V8 car with extremely fast piston speeds, which was the M3 GTS that was chasing the 1-M. 1-M did not sound any different than any other N series new inline-6 BMW engines, which became apparent later on solo laps of the 1-M.

You can write it down on paper somewhere, the sound of 1-M is not going to be much different than a regular x35 simply because BMW cannot do much with the sound/exhaust when the compression is so low, the rev limit is only 7000 rpm, beefy internals to cope with the torque and the piston speeds are so slow.

Just watched the M3 GTS video on the same track (bimmerfile.com) and presumably the same camerman. The M3 exhaust is sounds mildly attenuated on that video, although not to the same extent as with the 1M coupe.

Comparing the two is really apples to oranges (NA V8 vs. FI I6). However, much of the stock M3 sound insulation has been stripped out of the GTS, so one would expect a very robust exhaust note if the audio fidelity is good. This leads me to think the sound quality of the camera is in part responsible for the less than dramatic exhaust note of the 1M. But maybe this is just wishful thinking...

Sounds like the guy was only taking the engine up to 7000rpm. Hope the limiter is 8000rpm, not 7000!

Then you are out of luck! Can't have your cake and eat it too (unless it is a super expensive supercar of the past called F40 Ferrari).

It is a turbocharged engine. No chance in hell it will be 8000 rpm. All the press people who rode as passengers said it is at 7000 rpm. It is clear it has tall gearing and the car mostly stays in the midrange and not very rev-happy.

Look at the pictures of the interior of the 1-M from the press showing. Rev cut off is at 7000 rpm.

The track is Ascari, owned by the man who also started the car company and yeah Top Gear filmed the M3 vs C63 vs RS4 shootout there and Clarkson also used it for his DVD.

Those of you hoping for it to sound anything like an S54 need to realize that there is no way for a turbocharged engine to have an induction or exhaust noise that is anything like that, especially not in stock form. Turbo engines can definitely sound good, they just sound really different from their N/A counterparts and the extra exhaust piping in particular really muffles the sound. The aftermarket should be able to get you what you want, though.

Don't take the above to mean that I disagree though, I wish the world wasn't so gas mileage and emissions obsessed and that we could have some insane N/A motor in a tiny car like this. Something like an S54 or S65 would blow my mind.

Food for thought this engine will never sound like a N/A ///M motor. To me it's just a reworked N54/N55 variant. Hopefully the next gen 1 series M and F-30 M3 will have properly built motors by the m division instead of taking 135 engine and adding a simple tune. Atleast they got the suspension in order. I personnaly would have liked them to drop in a 360PS version of the S-54 from the E-46 CSL with M-DCT gearbox. Then this car would have a proper high revving M motor!

Note the unfinished testmule muffler.

I had a chance to hear the e92m3 as a testmule back in 2007 i think.
The sound was like shlt.

So i guess when they add the final muffler it will have a nice growl.

For me the M1 is not a true successor of the M3 (CSL) E46 or E30 because it does not have a NA H/R engine. The McLaren has redline at 8.500 rpm and still does not sound as good as a Ferrari/Maserati V8. Turbos just never sound as NA engines, whatever exhaust. Stock M3 does not sound very nice, it needs Akrapovic or any other good aftermarket exhaust, so what about M1?
By the way does anybody have a sound vid of BMW 335i with Akrapovic exhaust?
