Tuned n54's run 10-11 psi at 7k. 8 should be fine.

They also make less HP at 7k than they did at 4.8k, heh. That was the one thing I didn't like about my 135i's motor. It feels like it hits a wall at 6300.
EDIT: In all fairness, on 100 octane with the most aggressive map Terry offered I was still making power at redline, but I was holding like 13psi of boost vs 17.5 at 5800 (I'm not sure if he ever publicly released that map...). I think that's the absolute limit of the stock turbos, and over 17 PSI is definitely pushing it, but it was 20*F on 100 octane, so I had some fun, didn't throw any codes, or have any misfires or knocks.

I am of the opinion that it is a new engine which will eventually find its way into the new M3. I base my opinion on the following:
1.) Why would it take so long to develop the 1M if all that would be non-stock is that suspension. Okay, I know this could take a while, but over a year? With the resources BMW has? As iveman89 mentioned, an N54+DCT is already in the 335is so why the wait? 2.) It would be beneficial for BMW to use a 1er as a test mule for the engine and also be able to sell it. 3.) From their experience with transplanting the X5M/X6M's motor into the next M5/M6, they will perhaps follow suit with transplanting the same engine from the 1M to the M3. 4.) If it is a new engine, the increase in torque perhaps would be too much for the DCT (which would be used in the next M3) therefore, it would make sense to develop the engine and sell it with a manual first in the 1M and then get the new DCT ready for the M3 launch and tune the engine to suit in the mean time. If it indeed is a new engine, there would be little point in arguing over rev's, boosts and number of turbos. I assume it would take a similar format to the X5M's trick, patented, turbo configuration. But with the resources available at BMW, they can come up with anything. Well, it's all speculation. But my 0.02... |

Other than the upgraded suspension switching to M3 parts, beefing out the fenders to allow wider more aggressive wheels n tires and lightening things up a bit more, the engine is the end point here.
I believe the 1er's engine kicks ass. Nicest engine Ive driven thus far, only thing mine needs right now is my JB+ to be installed to smooth and raise things a bit. The new M1 would be best suited with this same block, however keeping the twin turbo setup, use slightly larger ported turbos maybe even with a stock version of a BOV setup rather than the DV in order to hold the higher boost numbers n faster spool with the larger turbos. I think with that and a bit of a heavier tune unleashing more of the engines true power, much like the JB's do for ours, I believe that will give the M1 its engine. Figure putting around 355whp 370tq. Doing so will obviously require opening up the stock exhaust setup though as well so itd be interesting to see where that would go, but looks like their plans are with a dbl exhaust anyways so there we go With the lighter chassis, better suspension bits, wider fenders, wheels n tires, LSD, bigger turbos and more power for the N54's base and dbl exhaust, this car will kick some ass. And I will likely be forced yet again to drive myself nearly into the poorman's pit to get myself one, cuz Ive never really been keen on going with a V8 or another NA engine again, not after I started driving turbo's, theres so just SO much more you can do and such a sweet power curve, its much harder to resist |

350-360 horsies is plenty IMO if they can keep the car at it's current weight. I just want them to do some extensive work on throttle response and engine/exhaust note.

BMW reavealed nearly everithing about the M1: suspensions, LSD, body kit, brakes,... but not the engine. Why? Because it is the most special thing about the car. Other parts are off the shelf but the engine is brand new.

At 360hp, without gaining any weight, it'd be a driver's race with the E92 M3. Probably quicker at most speeds, due to better midrange torque/power.

If M divisions intent is to test the engine in the 1M and perfect it for the next generation M3, then your concerns are misplaced!
