Summer tires in the snow?? only for a week...

Anyone just happen to drive on the hankook V12's in the snow?? Because I'm about to do it this week whether I like it or not.... looking at 2-4 in and it's uphill all the way to work....

I know I should be on winter tires, but my winter tires are in storage (w/ a van line) for another week due to my cross-country move. No way to get to them...

terrible idea.

I was in a 2 inch snowfall on my summers and I needed 4 people pushing my car in order to go up the 5% grade into my tire shop and mount my snows. I got stuck going up the crown of a road and took 5 minutes to make it over.

Hmmmm

What's the ambient temp supposed to be the day you're travelling? Or the extended forecast? The snow is probably just overnight. Even though snow maybe forcasted, the surface temp might not allow any to stick on the ground.

A week or so ago, we got some sleet, but nothing stuck and the roads were just wet. It was slippery, but managable.

I'd risk it. But you know your variables in the equation more than me.

If the road is dry you can carefully take your chances. If there is actual frozen precipitation on the ground you should flat-bed it home.

From experience, it will be a harrowing event if you try it. Even with dry roads, summer tires (I have PS2's on the M Coupe) get pretty darn loose in sub freezing temps, and add in any accumulation and it's a true adventure, even with a limited slip. I'd think the 135i would be a true mess in snow with summer tires.

I probably should specify that I have a 128i, so I have a little less torque to deal with at low rpms. And lived in the snow belt (Rochester, NY) for 5 years, without snow tires on my little hyundai.... I'm in Boise, ID now, so it is almost a joke what they consider snow in ID....

The snow wasn't sticking this morning so I drove.... Not the worst traction i've had (my stock all-seasons were worse after 15K on them), but it was damn slick in some spots, like the suicide lane I have to cross.... nothing I couldn't handle.

Tomorrows forecast is for at lest 4 in of sticking snow (a Blizzard by ID standards, just another day by NY standards)..... So I'll be getting a ride from someone else, NOT RISKING IT....

Thanks guys, this is the last snow before my tires get here so I should be good.

Good choice. I did a 55 minute commute on summer tires.... only reason i made it as far as i did was because i had AWD with a limited slip diff in the rear.

Breaking was a whole other issue...

even if you could get moving up the grade, what's to stop you from rear ending someone in front of you when you can't stop.

like manix said (though i hate agreeing with him) you're gonna get lawyered big time if you hit someone while you're wearing summer tires.
