1M vs 135i exhaust layout
I'm seriously considering trading in my Z4 Coupe & GTI for a 1M, but the only way I'd do it is if I could mount a trailer hitch for my bike rack (I don't like roof racks). So, does anybody have any idea from the pictures that have been released so far how similar the exhaust layouts of the two cars are? I want to ensure I could use a 135i hitch on the 1M with minimal modifcation.

Can you fit a tow hitch on a 135i? I'm sure the dealer here told me that you couldn't?

I never seen a 1er over here with a trailer hitch on it. I see tons of Golf's and other small cars with trailer hitches. I did a quick search on www.google.de and came up with a few hits.
Here is one hitch for 400 euros. http://www2.westfalia.de/shops/autoz...r_reihe_coup_/ The German word for Trailer Hitch = Anhängerkupplung. I think the main problem with the 1M is that the exhaust muffler sits transverse across/under the rear bumper. Right where a trailer hitch would go. I don't know how you would get around that. Yes you can put a class 1 hitch on a 135. You can use em for jet skis and track trailers. If the 1M has the muffler ^in the center I don't see how it can easily be done.

interesting seeing the German hitch ball design as a U shape (as seen in the link below) when I was in Germany. The 1M will have dual exhaust as other M cars.... which likely means the exhaust will be in the center.... don't know if that will preclude adding a hitch though. but I agree with Dackel... it very may....
wow.. what a crazy word for trailer hitch.. Quote:

I was planning on using the Curt Hitch:
http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitc...eid=2010300528 I'm hoping the 1M mufflers are placed far enough forward for there to be enough clearance for the cross-piece of this hitch.

I'm also planning to buy the 1M but I prefer to put the bike on the roof as on my current car: http://www.1erforum.de/members/treeh...-bike-mein.jpg

I knew at least one person would make this ignorant statement. The car is designed as a more performance oriented, but still street leagel, 1 series. If I wanted a track only car, I'd get a dedicated track car. When I'm not driving to or from cycling I enjoy spirited driving which is why I currently have a sports car to fullfill that need. Porsche offers a roof rack for bikes on the 911, so using a perfomance car for more than performance driving isn't that obsurd of an idea.

Or lets say, it's the middle of the summer and you want to hit the tail of the dragon but feel like mountain biking while you're up there...

OE BMW trailer hitch....
This week while at my local German BMW partner I was thumbing my way thru the accessory 1er book. I was kind of shocked when I came upon a factory BMW trailer hitch for the hatch 1er's. I bet one could make his also work on a coupe(e82)! Then I started to wonder IF RealOEM would list this trailer hitch... sure enough! Here it is.... http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...96&hg=71&fg=10 Towing hitch, detachable diagram #1 - BMW part number 71606765340 Hope this helps you guys out! Dackel |

Looking at these new exhaust pictures it appears that the Curt 135i hitch I linked above will work since it drops straight down from the bumper beam. I'd just have a different panel to trim.. Can anybody with a 135i take a look at their exhaust & weigh in on whether on not the clearance is comparable?

1M vs 135i exhaust layout
BMW mentions on their Performance Accessories page, the exhaust system invigorates engine output by allowing engine by-products to exit the vehicle more efficiently. Performance is being slightly increased as well

All you'd have to do is take off the front wheel and fold the rear seats for a road bike. My 58cm Specialized fits perfectly and I don't have to worry about it getting abused while on the highway. That said, I also have a roof rack when I'm bring along another cyclist.
