Maintenance Schedule table
Hi All,,
Is there any official maintenance schedule table that show what has to be done at what millage.. I remember having one from my old 325i. but i can not find any similar thing for my 2010 135i. I did not wait for the 15K to do my oil so i paid for a 5K and 10K. and when i took the car for the 10K oil change i told the SA not to reset or touch the OBD service indicator so the car keeps saying 5K till next oil change which is the free 15K. But as usual they did not listen and they reset all my OBD service indicators.. I know they did only oil change at 10K from the receipt and i am planning to take it to them when i ask for the free oil change at 15K but since my other service indicators are reseted I do not know what has to be done also. I keep all the receipts so i can go show them what was done and make sure they do what BMW schedule says. Thanks..

For US spec cars: For the first service 15K - 18K you only need an oil change and inspect the pollen filter. For the 2nd service, replace pollen filter, oil change and brake fluid flush. 3rd serice is all of the above plus air filter replacement. So I have been told by my dealer.
For German spec cars BMW says to replace the brake fluid yearly, not every other year as for US specs. I am also amazed that BMW has nothing listed in their maint books - to tell us what our cars need done. dumb. |

Theses vehicles do not have a set schedule mileage wise as to when they get serviced. no 2 cars are exactly alike. Each car calculates itself based upon fuel consumed, rpm, temp, start stops, etc etc etc.
the first servcie is ( on average approx 12 to 15k ) oil service Standard scope ( resetting lights) second service is ( on average 12 to 15k from last service ) oil service standard scope ( resetting lights) Airfilter replaced every second oil service at about 25k ( which most time's coincides with second service, the veh gets a vehicle check.. this is a full body inspection and wear item measurment ) Brake fluid is changed every 2years Micro filter is replaced when Brake fluid flush is done Plugs on the 135 / 335 are replaced at approx every 40k There is no coolant flush, or trans flush, or diff flush or fuel filter that is scheduled (1M's differ here due to specific 1M maint schedule) Wipers are allowed once per year./ Brakes are done when sensor triggers which is approx 3MM ( new pads are 11mm or so ) There is a special note on oil services.. the annual oil service. This is done on low mileage vehicles at least once per year.. in some cases it is possible too get 2 oil changes in one year due to the low mileage oil service rule because the lights are not reset. I hope that clears it up. ???

DriveHard is correct except that the Inspection is at 30k, not 25k. It may or may not coincide with an oil service.
And all of this is spelled out in my '08 128i Warranty/Service manual. Is this book no longer provided with the 2010 models? Tom |

The above is pretty much it....
But please change your oil and oil filter more often than what BMW suggests It used to be suggested every 5k miles, then BMW started offering free maintenance and all of a sudden its good for 15k or you get a free one each year while under the 50K warranty mileage limit. Also I would recommend a thorough cleaning of the engine (take off the manifold, etc) at 50K once you get out of warranty to scrub off all the carbon deposits that will be everywhere.. The engine will most likely need it. Even more so because the engine is both DI and Turbo.

BTW... in the US I don't think BMW replaces spark plugs before 100k miles. Aren't they suppose to last 100K or 7 years for the federal emission warranty?
It IS a good idea to replace them sooner though. My tuner said I should replace mine at 50K kms if you run a tune. EDIT NOTE: Yes, on Turbo cars the spark plugs get changed at 45K miles. NA cars get the plugs changed at 100K. |

Vee vill not accept a 20% error!!
Actually, some recent posts have indicated that BMW is not re-imbursing dealers for service performed at any time before the due date or mileage - there used to be a bit of wiggle room. And your original post was the clearest, most concise explanation I've seen of a schedule that BMW tries to make as confusing as possible. (BTW, turbo plugs are 45k, not 40!) Tom |

It doesn't just have to do with BMW offering free maintenance. The used fluids and filters are tacked on in regards to how environmentally friendly cars are. By increasing the mileage between services BMW effectively makes their cars more environmentally friendly as far a rating agencies are concerned.

But that is irrelevant to your issue as the SES light indicates a malfunction affecting emissions and has nothing to do with scheduled service. It often results from a loose gas cap, but could mean a misfire. First, make sure the gas cap is properly tightened and if the light doesn't go out after a couple of days, then have your dealer take care of it under warranty. Tom |

Just about to cross 50,000 miles and therefore my free maintenance is coming to an end. All maintenance will be DIY from here on out, which has me trying to decode BMW's condition-based servicing.
I know a lot of people wear tinfoil hats when it comes to the extended oil change intervals, but I'm not one of them. I trust that BMW isn't conspiring to make its engines fall apart over the long-term. And, I've yet to see compelling evidence that the extended intervals are actually bad. Lots of hearsay and disbelief, but very little - if any - actual evidence. Not to mention, many European cars (in Europe) have been using extended OCIs for years now so really, it's only new for the U.S. So, I'll defer to the BC to tell me when an oil change is necessary. The BC will also monitor my brakes, but it doesn't monitor things like air filter, pollen filter, and other fluids like brake, coolant, transmission, or diff. My understanding from Dackel's post above is that BMW recommends brake fluid to be replaced every two years, regardless of mileage (I think this is the norm in the U.S., no matter the make of the vehicle). And, BMW doesn't recommend coolant, transmission, or diff fluid changes at all or not until 100,000 miles. Is this correct? In the interest of not wanting to replace the auto tranny in my car, I'll probably do a fluid/filter change on that in the near future. What about the coolant or diff fluids? As for the air and pollen filters, I understand from Dackel's post that the air filter is replaced every second oil change. I guess I'll have to check the service records for my car to find out when it was last changed to know when it needs to be changed next. In regards to the pollen filter, that's changed when the brake fluid is changed, so every two years? That seems like an awfully long time for a pollen filter, no? Anything else I'm missing? Thanks in advance!! |

Same concerns as post above. At 40,000 miles and my brakes are starting to squeak again (had pads and sensors replaced last year this time). Anyway to get dealer to replace them again before 50k warranty expires?

Based on Mike Miller's Lifetime Maintenance Schedule v 06.11 (c):
Oil and filter: 7,500 miles (max) Gearbox (MT): 30,000 miles Differential: 30,000 miles Spark plugs: 60,000 miles (non-turbo), 30,000 to 45,000 (turbo) Air filter: 15,000 to 30,000 miles Fuel filter: 30,000 to 60,000 miles (it's in the fuel tank) Coolant: every 2 years Brake fluid: every year Cabin air filter: 30,000 miles Power steering fluid: 60,000 miles All of the above are +/- based on usage and assume OE BMW fluids/parts or better (Red Line). If you are a BMW CCA member, you can email Mike and he will send you his complete 30-page guide.

I don't drive my car much. My previous dealer at Oklahoma gave me annual engine oil change, brake fluid flushing, air filter replace, etc. So I expected same schedule and asked to local dealer at Los Angeles, but they denied my service request.
It seems I need to find a professional shop to follow my maintenance schedule. |
