I have neither (see cars I do have in my sig).
That said, if I were in the market for and e82 (and I do find them tempting), I'd rather have the 128i than the 135i. I don't like turbo power delivery and the hpfp, carbon buildup, and turbo failure issues are all serious issues that I wouldn't want to have to deal with. The 128 will likely be a MUCH more solid option as people start putting on more miles/owning these out of warranty. Above all else, though... I'd rather have the 220 lbs less weight than the extra HP.

Comparing the N52 and N54 is like chalk and cheese, completely different motors, both do what they're designed to do very well.
I think the 128i motor is great, plenty of power. I think the only thing that holds it back is the auto transmission. If you've got a manual N52 it's a great combination. It's not like we're comparing the 135i to a 118i! I do think a tuned 135i is on a whole new level to most things in its price range though. |

Steptronic in the 128 is a fantastic combo. Traded in a 2011 Mini Cooper S with JCW Tune and 6 manual to get my 128 and have had no regrets.

The 128i represents everything BMW has learned in the last 30 years put into 1 car. It is all their established tech without any of the new if you option it properly. |

I agree that low end torque and a nimble car make for an enjoyable vehicle. Thats part of the reason I was so attracted to the 135i and the 1 series in general. |

Actually I was agreeing with you. One can only go so fast, and I have been around physics long enough to realize what goes into the 'maximum safe speed' on a road... if you've ever flown over a bit of patchwork at 120 you know exactly what I am talking about - a bump at 60 can get you airborne at 120. But getting to the max speed quickly 9is what does it for me anyway so for me it's not silly since I never really drive over 80 or so. But what I cherish in my 128 is that I can pick a spot in a merge further ahead than in any other car I have driven, get up there and slip right in (unless some nimrod is stopped at the end of the ramp)
On a road like 495/695, I much prefer weaving lanes in the right lanes than pushing my car towards the safe limit of the road I'm on by passing everyone in the left lane - only point I was trying to make; didn't make it very well I spose The one thing I don't like about the 128 is it seems there's not much to be done mod-wise past cosmetics and paltry 5-10HP gains but like I said it's way enough of a car for me. |

You do realize with what are essentially BMW factory tunes you can bump the engine up some 30-50hp right?

Evolve may be doing this in the future, where you can install the tune at home using your laptop. I think he said OEM since they're based on the 272 hp X5 3.0.

AA's tune is only good for 15 hp, according to them. If there were an easy way to get 30-40 more hp, I'd be all over it. There's talk about switching over to the 3-stage intake manifold in conjunction with a tune, but nothing I've seen indicates these kinds of gains.

evolve already has done this. You can buy their tune and tuning module for 799. I was going to purchase it about a year ago but i am low on cash and saving up for rims.

I don't believe that is correct-- was talking to Sal at evolve about it last week and he said not yet.
