If your after outright speed then there is a world of metal to chose from if you want to be quicker than what the 1M will be.

But is that really the point?????

The Mustang, probably a decent enough car but not really a competitor to the 1M if you value anything other than speed and brute power.

What about finesse, where do the Mustang argument on that subject?????

I can understand the bang per buck argument for the Mustang but you really have to look else where for a TRUE competitor to the 1M. I compiled a small list of possibles in stock form.

Audi TT-RS
Nissan 370Z
Porsche Cayman S
Lotus Evora

and the most obvious one ...... the M3.

Maybe you guys in the States can come up with some other homegrown kit but I doubt the Mustang could be one of them.

I think its way to early to write mustang gt off. If value isn't a competing factor that would open up the list quite wide.

All of these other cars with significant performance numbers, especially those coming in at significantly lower prices, can only be good for those of us wanting an M1. Competition is always good, and hopefully will cause BMW to "up the ante" on the M1's own performance and keep the price in check as much as possible.....

Mustang is no competition to M1 in Europe. It's probably more expensive than M1 in Europe, if they will sell it there..

Absolutely no doubt the Mustang will be quick...not as quick as BMWZONE wishes it to be or motortrends time..I don't buy it. Ford is doing a great job in improving the car. But, at the end of the day when I want to take my lovely family out to dinner at a fancy restaurant..a Mustang with even 1000 HP does not fit my bill. That is why a Mustang should be compared to a Camaro..BMWZONE...you really do push the envelpe comparing it to a M3? I am by far not a BMW lover either (hpfp), but for the moment I do enjoy my car and for now , say atleast the first 2 years of most of the Mustangs out there what I will enjoy hearing them say is " but he is heavily modded" YES.. I am sir. We already have 3 different times from 3 different sources for the 5.0.

^^^ Can you elaborate why you wouldn't want to bring your family to a fancy dinner in a mustang???

Sounds kind of like the ol' b/c I have a roundel I am better than you mentality...

That is not a general opinion but my own..I feel I am too old and even a Honda Accord would be fine does not have to be a BMW it has nothing to do with looks or vehicule type.. more my age.

That mentality is just plain rediculous - it doesn't make "you better". With that said, there's nothing wrong with being brand proud or owning up to the fact that part of the value is in the cache of the brand, whether that be the clothes, wine, cars, etc that you purchase. There is value in that.

Furthermore, who do you think is going to get better service at their dealer? You at the Ford or Chevy dealership, or me at the BMW dealership? There's value there. And how about if your car is valet'd at a nice hotel or restaurant? Do you know they often park mine up front in plain view and where it won't get dinged? Are you sure they'd do that for a mustang or vette? There's a little more value for me. Like it or not, there's value for a consumer in purchasing brands perceived to be higher-end.

Just food for thought here...

All cars are great some prefer Kia some prefer Ferrari, but at the end of the day if money was no object , I doubt any of us would be driving what we are driving presently.. so let's all just get along and have a friendly discussion

Yeah - that's why I (and anyone else for that matter) looks for a Mustang 5.0 - to take the family out to dinner.

That sums it up nicely. You are paying more for the brand because performance-wise the 5.0 is superior to the 135i or imaginary 1M and the equal of the 60k M3.

Hmm.. yeah thinking back I did get better service at the BMW dealership...

But then again I was also there 10 unscheduled times in 16 months... I mean in that case who wouldn't be on a first name basis with the SA and techs and NOT expect good service w/that many problems...

And wow you really think a valet is going to treat a 1 series any better than a new mustang or vette??... One of the times I valet'd the bimmer I got "hey is that the entry level BMW??"... Just like many gas station attendants I have dealt with... Most just don't know any better and yes they see the roundel but they also see a "1" and think poor mans BMW (which is annoying b/c its just ridiculous)... It sucks but it is true that most people have no clue b/c in the non-ethusiasts eyes it goes 7,6,5,3,1 in terms of the luxury/value/status of the car no matter the options or what is under the hood...

I would even go out on a limb and say 98% of non ethusiasts think a 328i coupe costs more than a 135i... just b/c of the "3"...

EDIT: And granted I have not had my chevy for very long the two times I have been in the dealership so far..(1 for an inspection and 1 for a nail removal from the tire) I got just as good service as I did the BMW dealer I use to go to...

I dont understand this. I guess it boils down to opinion. My Father is 48 years old. He owns an 08 Range Rover, 10 Mercedes Ecoupe, 09 Lexus IS350, and 08 MINI S. He calls me freaking out over the 5.0 around 4pm today. He's owned countless BMW's, Caddys, etc. He has zero problem driving that to dinner. Age has nothing to do with it.

Ummmm yeah, they will. If it's a nice 1er. I live in Vegas and Valet every weekend, Bellagio, Palazzo, Aria, you name it. And I ALWAYS get a compliment and they keep it out front.....right next to the Porsches, ranges, Maserattis etc....... You think a Mustang is in the same class as a Vette?

Well, I'd say you're in the far minority. I've had 08 135i for 2 years this month and never had it in the dealer for anything other than the oil changes they pay for. Also, a buddy and I just drove up to Canada (6 hours each way) in my car and I got nothing but compliments from the young gas station attendants as well as the valet at the Fairmont who parked my car up front between an R8 and a new 7 series.

Do you cross the path of black cats and break mirrors often?

My Pontiac dealership was WORLDS better than my BMW dealership. As a matter of fact my current dealership service department is one of the worst I've delt with EVER, and I've owned 35 cars at this point.

That's got to be some of the weakest reasoning I've ever read on here. Valets don't give a damn about a small mass produced BMW.

This argument is pointless... Have you ever drove a 1'er and then a brand new mustang GT to a valet to prove who gets the better treatment? Also are you some idiot valet?

Well neither have/am I...

And ya know what these are all opinions at this point anyway... Some think the 1 series is awesome (like myself), some think they are the bottom of the totem poll... some think vettes are sick, then again some think vettes are the white trash version of a porsche...

My main post was I felt like he was making a dig at the stang by saying he wouldn't bring it out to a "fancy" dinner..

Haha maybe we should we find a valet forum and post this poll to get some actual numbers??
