I wish people would stop the crying over the "underwhelming" power numbers. I mean my brother has a 335i coupe and its an auto and not tuned... its a BEAST compared to any old 3series.... it pulls like a freight train. I cant wait to drive a car thats lighter, manual and much more powerful... not to meantion BMW has always been about being a "drivers" car and not the fastest in a straight line. If thats all thats important to you that go buy a Shelby. ( which by the way is a very sick car in the 2011 model ). Anyways. my point is. We dont know how this thing will FEEL. So chill until you do.

Was any one able to confirm whether the engine is in fact from the Z4 35iS or actually been tweaked by BMW M to improve the response? The description from the press release is very ambiguous!!

For what I see in the engine bay, I believe the engine has indeed been tweaked by M division to improve throttle response, hence the "free revving" statement.
I can only wish to get enough money and buy a white one and keep it forever.

Since I don't currently own a 135i this looks like it is exactly what I am looking for. I will need to see, though, how much $$$ the only local dealer will charge before I can pull the trigger. |

You can complain, "omg its too slow a M car for me" but you people need to stop saying "its a 135 with performance package" or "why not 135is" your stupidity pains me, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. ALL M cars have had varying levels of output, but they've all had ONE thing in common. M-derived suspension/chassis, namely a LSD which is exclusive to M cars. Don't have a M LSD or Differential? Not a M. Have one? M |

"The turbocharger system developed for the engine of the new 1 Series M Coupe maintains a high output throughout the entire engine speed range. "
So does that mean different turbos? |

Yes, the new TD03s have little "///M" emblems cast into the exhaust housings of the turbochargers. This allows for greater flow capacity which equates to a stronger engine at the same boost level.

How it will feel? I don't give a crap.. Bottom line is for the $$ and what the car symbolizes, I would have liked to see another 20-30HP or so from the factory. People need to stop whining about anything negative said about the 1M. Shesh. Just so there is no confusion, the rest of the car I think is great (minus the seats). Just should have had that extra kick in the rear is all..

Yup just a hair over. MIGHT ditch the 40R and go 42R in the next year or so.

Way to differentiate! Sarcasm aside (this thread needed some more, please don't take offense), you are right in that it does not look like a 60/40 split -- but BMW IS very sneaky, and there could have been some PS work to make it look more symmetrical.

The power output is really underwhelming. I had waited impatiently for the original 1 series. Then I found out it was a heavy little tank and wasn't that much quicker than the 335i.
So I patiently waited for the M version thinking that at least it might have enough HP to jump in. Yet again I was disappointed. Unfortunately I currently live in an area with crappy roads and no real fun twisties to drive. So about all I can hope for is enough HP/TQ to make up for the lack of fun roads. So maybe they'll finally put some real HP in this package or shave a few hundred pounds off of it. I wanted something that was pretty quick and small to drive. This doesn't look likely to be much faster than a 135i. They should have bumped up the HP/TQ considerably or put the little porker on a diet to differentiate it more from the plebian models. I can't easily bump up the HP/TQ numbers with aftermarket help as BMW is very glad to cancel your warranty in my area. |

Yeah, what can I say... I'm sure the suspension + bodywork is great (minus the FAKE fender exhausts... I mean, a renault clio RS has those, and they're functional, and the clio is like 1/3 the price... why couldn't BMW do it?).
But the engine is a disappointment. Every M car should have a special engine. I understand that to the handling freaks, this will not matter. I understand that the throttle response etc. will be different than on a 135i. But even so, it's a shame they couldn't come up with something better. The thing that's right is the price though. |
