So I've got something stupid for all of you. But I'll start with a warning.
BUY A WATER PUMP FROM THE PLACE DOING THE INSTALL SO THEY WARRANTY THEIR LABOR. And now, the craptacular details. I bought a new-style Continental water pump with the shorter bolts from a BMW coding company that I'm not naming (yet) - The owner had gotten rid of his 335i and got an M3, so he had a pump he planned on installing, which he said he'd sell for $320 with bolts. I figured, it's a new pump, likelihood of issues is going to be minimal. To be fair, I've notified him and asked him to refund me for the bad pump - (Update: He refunded me in full and wants the pump back to return to the dealership. He's also told me that if they replace it, he'll send me back the replacement pump for free) So, with my perfectly good (so far) stock pump at 110k, I decided to get a new OEM thermostat/hose and pay a local shop to do the work. Labor wasn't bad at $400. The next day, I noticed the water pump was running at odd times and the car was running warmer than usual. I pulled the following codes: Engine / Motor: - Fault: electric coolant pump, power, reduced operating - Code: 002E98 - Fault: electric coolant pump, the communication - Code: 002E85 - Fault: Intelligent battery sensor, communication - Code: 002E8E - Fault: Oil condition sensor, communication - Code: 002EA1 I cleared them, they kept coming back. I called the shop and told them there must be a loose connector or something...the next day, a friend and I took off work during lunch time to pick up the 135i and take it back to the shop. 1 mile outside of my home, I entered limp home mode. Oil temp was only 250, so it had to be overheated coolant. Had the car towed. The repair shop showed me the problem. The water pump leaked at the electrical connector and shorted out the water pump. Not bad enough to blow a fuse, but enough to trigger some of the other codes. They're going to cut me a deal on a new pump, and give me 50% off labor to put in the new pump. Lesson learned: New pumps can fail out of the box. Attached is a pic that the shop took. It's super, super lame that being proactive about replacing my water pump caused the exact problem I was hoping to avoid.

Yep! I agree. That is why I elected to have my local BMW Zentrum change my water pump(and thermostat and bolts). It ran me ~630 euros and I am covered anywhere in Europe for two years(unlimited kilometers). To me that cinched the deal - bc I did not want to be left broken down in Italy or Switzerland(or where ever) paying thru the nose for another water pump. I've been saying this for awhile now... just because the parts look the same... BMW vs OEM - that doesn't mean they ARE the same. Also a new part doesn't always mean its a good part. The (many)part suppliers for auto parts have to meet the strict standards for an OE part. Often times the parts that don't meet the manufactures specs for OE, get sold in the aftermarket parts network. While these parts look like the same part in a different box... the part is NOT the same. Dackel

He purchased it from the dealership for his own 335i, but sold the car and bought an M3, so he didn't need the part. It was out of return period but not out of warranty period. Since he was the original purchaser, they want him to do the return. They won't give him money back, but will replace it with another pump, which he said he'd just give to me since he has no need.

My car is a 2012 135i. The water pump just failed (Dec '16) with only 15,500 miles on the clock. The oil filter housing was also leaking and needed replacement and resealing. The thermostat was ok but I changed it anyway since the water pump was being done. The total bill came to $2,500 with a 10% discount. I do mostly in town driving and only very rarely hit the turbo.

I think most dealers charge about four to five hours labor(rate) plus the parts. Most guys on the forum end up paying around $1,100 for everything(pump. e-stat, coolant). The OFH gasket runs about $500 - I think. ? Dackel

The dealer quoted me $1,550 (parts and labor) just for the water pump. The place I went to (Bavarian Motor Experts) charged me $691 for the water pump, $194 for the thermostat, and $484 labor to replace both, plus $300 or so for related parts including a hose coolant oil cooler to t/stat, hose radiator top, hose vent radiator-coolant tank, gaskets, coolant, etc. It was $638 labor to remove, reinstall & reseal the OFH gasket plus parts. I've no idea what the dealer would have charged for everything but just isolating the water pump BME saved me money, not as much as I'd hoped, but some. I'm guessing the dealership would have hit me for close to $3 grand for everything. I also had them do a complete diagnostic on the car which cost $110. That let me know I'll need control arm bushings soon too. I was too depressed to ask how much that will cost. And the car has only 15,500 miles on it.

IF I were you... I'd have your e-pump replaced before you head out across the country.

Water Pump Lifetime Warranty!
Just bought a '12 135i 6MT, 37k miles. The day after, the water pump went out. Thankfully I purchased a warranty with it...
The dealer I bought it from said they were happy to fix the problem, but being 100 miles away, it was easier to take it somewhere close by. Thankfully i only got the yellow light, and was still able to drive it at an easy pace to the dealer. Took it to BMW Service, changed the pump, I'm out $100 deductible, and the service manager mentioned something great... They are running a special this quarter, that certain parts, water pumps, alternators, and a few others, from BMW and installed by them, come with a lifetime parts and labor warranty!! So if it goes out again, even after my regular warranty is done, the pump will be covered. Since this is my first post here, (many years on bimmerforums,) I can't post a new topic. Does someone want to spread the word? |
