Can someone clear something up for me.
Am I mistaken in thinking that due to the US-Australian Free Trade Agreement, any product manufactured in the US is not subject to duty above $1,000 that would otherwise be imposed if the product was made in another country? |

However be aware you may be forced to pay a brokerage fee for a shipping broker who receives the items in Australia. Best to confirm door to door shipment with your vendor so you won't get stung with a broker. Be absolutely certain it is door to door. |

They hold your shipment in customs and demand payment of fees otherwise they won't release it. I know they take advantage of people because in those situations the additional fees are not warranted and payment has been made for door to door. I had to pay fees for a shipment that was door to door and under $1000.

This is probably a n00b question, but what sort of costs would I be up for buying a BMPE from an eBay store? Price is just under $800 and shipping is $250. (note: eBay store is in USA)
Thanks in advance. Last edited by Looks; 09-05-2011 at 06:31 AM.. |

If you read the post you'll see that shipping is NOT included in CV calculations - this is the very first line of my post! Also in the original post is an example of costings. |

Tay what's the difference between "international transport and insurances" and shipping? Above it says that the local transport costs are included but to our shores it isn't.. Maybe i'm lining up for a 3rd fail here.. :/ |

The difference is that if you take out insurance that is covered by Australia Post AND the original shipping agency (not by DHL etc. where the insurance is covered door-to-door by the one company), then the price of domestic delivery/insurance is calculates as part of the CV. As an example, say you bought something from a private vendor in the US for $950AUD. Shipping costs say $200. The private vendor decides to ship via USPS which when lands in Australia gets handled by Aus Post. The cost of shipping and handling (and insurance if applicable) from the boat when it docks in Australia to your door is included as part of the Customs Value. So if it costs more than $50 of that $200 for Australia Post's handling and insurance, then that would put the CV over $1000 and you may be liable for GST and Duty. Hope that helps! PS: No 3rd fail good question! |

**********s just quoted me $428.09 shipping for an Injen CAI that costs $398.95. They also will only ship to the nearest airport (I assume this means there would be a broker involved) and insist on payment via Wire Transfer.
You can guess what I told them... |

Should definitely add something about Customs Clearance and/or Port Fees to help members differentiate between what types of shipping will generate "surprises" and which ones won't.
