I'd be nice if it was more than a year. Maybe we'll know more at the NAIAS.

There is also absolutely NO point in introducing an LCI for a single year of production. I don't care what they say, they're building AT LEAST 2 more years of the current 1er and 2+ years of 1SMCs. Anything less than that makes absolutely no financial sense and is not how they've run any other model cycle up to this point. Anyone who thinks they're building 1 year or only 2,800 of these is delusional.

+1! YuP!

I suspect BMW has already started production for the 1M. Why else would they still not allow factory plant tours - still!

When I toured BMW Leipzig factory (back in May, 2010) they said they can build over 700 cars PER day! That is for all the models they build there. ie: X1, e81, e82, e88. I would think they could build as many 1M's as they would like too! Or as many as they have orders for! BMW AG also said on that tour that the Leipzig factory produces about 177K vehicles per year. They work in two shifts and six days a week. Most of the production there is of the X1 sav.

I also suspect that the 1M will be made for more then just two model years(+). I also suspect that once the M3 is out of production we l might see a DCT and more colors. But that is just a hunch I have. I think BMW will remain mum on this for quite some time.

That is exactly why I'm skeptical of the 1 year of production; I can't figure out why they would produce this car for 1 year only...?

It would be far more logical to allow production of the 1M to run till the end of the current 1 series' production. That should allow for roughly 1-2 more years of production, then they can roll in a Z4M, or something along the lines, while we wait for the production of the next M3.

I don't want to pay top dollar for a car that's claimed to be produced for 1 year only when we're actually looking at a 1-2+ year production; I'm definitely assuming on the production life span here.

I'm pretty sure they're building the dealer demo cars as we type this which is why they're not allowing tours.

I was freaking out initially as my lease isn't up until Sept 2012 but then it dawned on me that BMW has NEVER made a car for only 1 year and they've barely shown pictures of the LCI, let alone rolled them out of the factory. The LCI was the dead giveaway - they would never do that for a single year and certainly not a single year M car.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I appreciate it.

I'm still baffled as to why we don't have any concrete information from BMW regarding the production.

It's been said it's approximately a year (for production time), call it concrete, or not, but the introduction of the 1M coincides with the release of the LCI 1 series.

The 1 series should have 1-2+ years of life left after the LCI correct?

If so, why only produce the 1M for under a year?

It would be nice if Scott offered some, current, concrete, facts on the production.

It's in their best interest to hype it as limited edition as people will rush out and buy them. I would say there is a MINIMUM of 2 years of production left for this model cycle and they will produce the 1M to the end and then some.

Logically, that makes sense, I couldn't agree more.

I would just like to see something from Scott; a press release from BMW would be ideal.

They can hype the shit out of the car, that's cool and all. I just want some facts, dates, and numbers.

If this car is limited to 1 year of production; I've got a hell of a lot of work to do to an STi: prepare for its feature, parting out and sale. That's a lot of work to do in under 6 months, or less.

Did you guys notice that the US press release talks about the 2011 1 ///M.

So now I am confused, will there be a 2011 and 2012 1///M or just the latter?
