I hope that they do come out with an M version of the 1 series so they can keep the prices down on the 135i. As far as weight reduction for the M version goes.... Carbon fiber roof?

I don't see that there is any room for an M1. The 135i will be so impressive, that you need at least the new V8 to make a real difference.
Actually, I don't rule out that the 3.2 NA is a clear step back in driving experience! OK, it's high revving, but the bi-turbo is not actually low revving either. Besides the 15% to 40% torque deficit of the 3.2 is noticable everytime you want to accelerate until the engine builds up to at least 6000rpm! With the V8 or the 3.2 the car will cost much more and consume 30% more. The smarter package is beyond any doubt the 135i and, when I'am not mistaken, a real sportscar value proposition since it will get compared to a Cayman S very soon. Guys, the figures of the 135i already put this tiny and affordable car in the middle amongst a Jag XKR, Carrera, Maserati, 650i, SL550 and other serious toys! Not bad as play mates  |

Wouldn't mind having some other playmates along for the ride if you get what I mean.

Well BMW has an interesting problem. If they do build the M1 with the old M3 engine they basically have a repackage e46 M3. It will have +33 hp, LSD and perhaps some weight saving compare to the 135i.
I am not sure how big of an audience that will create. Pretty sure there are people out there who would want one for M badge, but it's the same car as e46 m3. I will just buy a E46 M3 and I don't have to wait. E46M3 is a great car but I am not sure if I want to spend 10k more to get a repackaged one that came out 5-6 years ago. Why not just get a used for a lot less. If they don't use the old engine they will have to engineer a brand new high reving 6cylinder engine whose only purpose is for the M1 since the Z4M will be getting the v8 and that engine has to have over 333hp. |

The one thing that makes me think that BMW will not make an M1 with this generation of the 1-Series is the fact that the 1-Series is really already 1/2 way thru its lifecycle. It came out in Europe in 2004 and just went thru a "mid-life freshening". That means that the chassis really only has 2 to 4 years to live before the next version comes out. Since M versions typically come out 2 years after the regular version, the M1 would be out for only 1 or 2 model year. That's a lot of development cost for little return.
Just a thought. |

I just dont understand why I cant find anything about an M1 on the de page. Like what was said before, they should have a M1 in Germany IF they were going to release one at all.

Yea we talk about making are cars as fast as an "M1" but honestly how many of you guys would really have the "cojones" to go through with it??
I mean you'd think people in charge at BMW havent thought about this by now. I heard the same arguments a long time ago. Except they sounded like, BMW would never put an N54 motor in a 1 series, etc... I think were in for another suprise fellas. I'm going to enjoy my 135i for 3 yrs and then I'll snag an M1. I'm curious to see how many modded 135i engines get blown to bits trying to be an M1.

I hope we can eat out words, but as I stated earlier higher pressure = less longevity. I guess it just depends on how strong that block is. If its anything like an audi, mitsu or 2jz block then we are in good shape. |

well what we have heard (i believe it was from SCOTT's mouth/keyboard?) was that there will be an M1 and it will enter the market as they take the 135 out. therefore it doesnt have to "fit" between the 135 and the M3, it is going to be what an M3 would have been if it didnt have to compete against the RS4, IS-F etc.. and didnt have to be based on such a fat-ass chassis
peak output horsepower can be a bit above where the 135 is from a revamped, lighter 3.2 (which will save significant development costs, hopefully) enough to where they could chop off a good 400lbs (i know, probably not, but wouldnt that be nice?), put in a lsd, CF roof, make it stiff as a brick, imagine.. and even if you can catch up with that in the straightaways in your tuned 135, you wont be howling with laughter like the M1 fellow will be that being said, i like turbos and the 135 would be perfect for me. i dont need 100% rawness. although really it would depend on throttle response and what kind of low rpm torque i could get out of the M, which i wouldnt expect to compare to the 135 |

As someone else have pointed out the current 1 series platform will end in 2011 and that gives this M1 a 3 year life cycle. If BMW offers the M1 I will jump on it right away but I don't see it introducing a new M1 in current 1 series. Maybe BMW will in the next generation. |

It's a shame that so many equate a good car solely with horsepower. HP is only 1 part of the equation.
I'd gladly take an M1 in whatever guise BMW would produce it in. M has yet to make a car that I didn't wish I had. I'd take a stock M3 over the fastest Proceded v10.2.5.6.8.9. with robotic hydraulic H&R Tein KWS NASA suspension mods ANY day! M cars are special. One day the 335, 135, 535, whatever other 35 will be just be another BMW. |

I hold the same sentiments. But it doesn't seem like there will be a M1 on the horizon for the next year. I hope they do but I am sick of waiting. I was on the waitlist of the new m3 but BMW wants too much for the M3. I think a decently equipped M3 will cost 70k out the door. |

Btw, it really gets me going when people bash the E92 M3. They said its softer, etc. They said the exact same thing about the E46 when it came out. Now everyone is at its feet. Caranddriver.com gave it a great review. Yes the car got bigger but it is just as competent as ever.

Hmmm. An M1 in 2011. That would be right about the time I originally planned on getting another car. I really like the idea of a 'new M3' based off the 1. WISHFUL THINKING: BMW produces a M1 with at least 350 HP, 3400 pounds (give or take), and the usual M suspension bits and styling = GAME ON.
