This whole thread I've said I have nothing against lux. I am really hoping you quoted the wrong person here...either that or I missed where I attacked you? Sorry if you feel attacked by this, I like your lights, just trying to give people a cheaper, simpler option. |

Whoa someone has no idea what he is talking about. 13.8 is within OE spec. Stop trying to make yourself feel better by shitting on things you know NOTHING ABOUT. Money can't buy intelligence now can it... I'd guess you have some uber expensive lights on your car now don't you? EDIT: just checked, hes got lux lol. Nothing wrong with lux, but please don't talk shit about things you don't understand to make yourself feel better about your own purchases. Last edited by darkrom; 06-09-2014 at 07:41 AM.. |

I owned an MR2 Spyder a few years back, and I installed a gadget that boosted the voltage to the main headlamps by about 10%. You could see it kick in about 1 second after startup, and the increase in brightness was pretty substantial. I ran those for a number of years, and never had a problem. (I think one bulb burned out one time.) That's not to say the angel eyes won't have a problem - they may be more susceptible to heat. Dunno.

So we know there is a random possibility at any given time for adaptive headlight failure using LEDs but this has few if any more failures than stock? Bulbs don't count vs a new LCI headlamp in my opinion. Curious to try this. Is there a way to adjust the voltage to a happy medium between the stock and 13.8?

Yes there are steps in between, but really its not much of a difference IMO. I tried a slight bump in voltage but I think people are overthinking this. I ran the OEM bulbs for 13.8v for 3 months looking for problems. Found none. I'll continue to watch my new white bulbs, but they are completely fine still.

As a side note, someone needs to make a 6000k bulb. Or a 5500k.

I'm guessing the AE's still dim when you turn the headlights on though, no? Just bought the BMWhat app and it seems interesting, just gotta wait to get my car back from the body shop.

Nope. No dimming. There are different settings for AE's as running lights vs when the headlights are on. I made both 13.8v so it never changes.

I'm waiting to get my car back from the shop and waiting to get the BT OBD adapter from the BMWhat guys. This is the main reason I'm buying it. The cost for this seems a lot cheaper than 200 bucks for LEDs and waaaay cheaper than 2800 dollars for a new adaptive headlight if water gets in or breaks because of all the extra LED crap.

The LED lights won't break anything though. I'm not saying don't do the coding, just saying replacing it with LEDS is no more dangerous than how I replaced it with new halogens. Gotta close the headlight up correctly after either way.
This is just cheaper. |

The thing with LED is that you have to do it correctly. Meaning tuck the all the bits and pieces out of the way of the motor and arm movements and make sure you put the cover back on correctly. I agree with darkom, even simply change out the bulb can cause a failure if the cover is not fitted correctly.
With all that said, I would have tried this fix instead of LED if I knew it was an option. Then I would not have to worry about those heatsink/ballast things.

I think you can use any BT adapter or a USB cable if your phone supports USB OTG. They suggest ordering their adapter because it apparently has better signal. It's from Germany and you have to order on paypal in Euros. So if you don't want to do that, you could try a different adapter.

Guess I gotta figure out if my phone will support this first, well, actually pretty sure my tablet will.
They suggest ordering their adapter, but they have at least 3 different ones.

Use this adapter. I had a generic one that "worked" but it is super unreliable and some modules were off limits. This is the official one that I've had 100% success with.

Re: LEDs. Changing the voltage seems to be way lower risk than going with LEDs. Even if you change the bulbs out. Switching to LED means cramming a lot of electronics into the headlight assembly. You have to secure everything in there to ensure it doesn't get loose and cause an adaptive headlight failure when it gets caught in the motor. Meanwhile changing the bulb only causes a problem if you don't put the back cover on properly. If you take your time and pay attention, this won't happen. I don't see how upping the voltage while remaining in specs is harmful. |
