ok i just got my car back and i got the 881!
im really suprised they were able to get my car done in one day too, it only took them like 8 or 9 hours! so far the car feels a little more powerful, but nothing to Oo and Ah over, just a little more low end grunt. |

I wonder if there really is an improvement and if so, what is the reason for it. Maybe its just in our heads..i dont know cuz mine feels slightly more powerful/"better" too with the 881 pump.... |

nope...i haven't had a "come back" since the new HDP's were put in. i've done so many of these pumps that i've got it down to about 30 mins to finish the job. it takes longer to run diagnostics, print out all needed documents, fill out warranty info, blah blah. replacing the actual pump is quite simple tho...as long as you have the right tool

the pump is a vane type pump. the old ones had internal failure. there isn't any sort of pressure increase, let alone any power increase. it's all in your head. the pump doesn't control how much fuel is being pushed in, all it does is make sure that the injectors have enough pressure to shoot into the combustion chamber. since it's direct injection and the injectors can fire up to 3x in one stroke, it needs enough fuel pressure to shoot into the cylinder. otherwise the compression would shoot the fuel back into the rail...that would be a bad situation.

here is the inside of the N54 engine. you can see the piston on it's compression stroke. the injector opens up TWICE even before ignition. think about how hard that injector has to open up under all that compression without the fuel being backed up.

maybe you should look into an aftermarket warranty once the factory one runs out. |

Might do that, thanks for the info, want to keep her for a long time, but I know they can get pricey after warranty is up.

Mine just went @ 12000 miles. It takes a long time to start and it shakes for a little when it does start. It is in the shop now, but they are busy and won't be able to get to it until tomorrow

Mine just went out too. I just dropped it off today. Anyone know if they will look at the ECU? I dont think they would for a fuel pump but I'm getting kinda worried because I had JB3 Pin-out version installed before but I took it out last night but if you look closely you can still see the electrical tape residue around the wires.

Let me add to the list of the HPFP failures, as of tonight. Was out enjoying the balmy 23 degree weather in the 'burgh, and came out to leave a store I had been shopping at, started the car.....rough start, the idle was so rough the car was almost rocking side-to-side. Thought to myself, "Oh, sh!t", and sure enough, there goes the CEL. I even tried to "limp" to the next store under "reduced power" hoping I'd be able to at least get around, albeit with my flashers on with people swearing at me on the road for going so slow. Unfortunately, even after revving the heck out of it just to get going a little, the car stalled on me 3 times before getting to the next store, about a 1000 yds away....at least BMW Assist doesn't suck...
So this thread is particularly timely for me, especially about making sure I have part 881. And maybe I can take some solace in the face that GuardianAngel had less than a day turnaround time. I guess this is common enough now that dealers are keeping this part in stock routinely.... BMW....ISSUE A F@$%ING RECALL ALREADY!!! Enough is enough.... Sorry for venting....the flatbed took 2.5hrs to get to me...missed dinner. You don't want to be around me when I've missed dinner... BTW, my car is bone stock except for cosmetic mods. Don't plan on doing anything to the engine until I'm out of warranty...Think it would be worth asking about the latest ECU version? Is there any benefit? |

BMW will not allow any software updates just by request. that would be out of your pocket. unless you have a control module replaced or a reason to update, you're SOL.

Thnx for the info.
I still would like to know from anyone what the benefits of updating the software would be, if any. Also, how much it would cost, I guess.... |

it's buried under the intake manifold on the side of the block. if you take off the intake filter housing and look straight down between the 1st and 2nd intake manifold runners, you should see it. i'll try to take pics of it tomorrow if i can remember.
