The oil can will catch oil vapor that will have fuel content as well
It's very common for direct injection engines

Any oil it catches is that much less oil that will get onto the valves & cook. I installed one because I had to have a walnut blast pretty early in the accumulated miles cycle.

How easy is it to unscrew the tank to check for oil? Mine is an N55 so the location of the OCC seems more user friendly, but can you get your hand around the tank and remove it easley, or do have to remove the whole assembly to check the contents?

It's not a problem getting to the can on N55 cars. There's plenty of room to get your hand in there without removing the whole assembly.

I had trouble getting the threads started on my car. Even if you do take it off the mount it takes like 5 minutes. Not sure if you are using a tune or anything but keep in mind that you may have the problem others have with a dead battery if you install the OCC with JB4 using ISO firmware on the N55.
