Actually yes. I went down to the shop and they checked the drain and it turns out it was clean and not clogged. However, they discovered that the drainage hose is NOT connected to the evap box in the car and that's what is causing the smell is a little bit of moisture left in there that's not draining. However, it sounds like an expensive fix to reconnect that hose (mainly labor and getting access to it) so I'm going to let it be unless it gets worse (it's not THAT bad, I make sure to blow out the vents after use anyway). As of now I've never noticed any sort of moisture on the carpet or anything like that so I will have my fingers crossed.
Anybody know a process to reconnect that hose to the box? |

Maybe just try another shop. Sounds like they did not want to deal with this repair.
Normally you can get to the evap drain tube by removing the underside of the dash. Or maybe just by pushing the drain tube back into the car - from underneath the car(using jack stands).

I have to admit, was really pissed at the fact I was charged $200 in labor for them to not fix a single thing. But they did figure out what the problem was so it's not a total loss. |

Yep. The evap drain is probably more closer to the center of the passenger's feet area. Maybe slightly to the left of center.

The "funky" smell I get in my car doesn't smell particularly bad but it does smell like wax from Crayons or something, at least, according to my kids, but now I can't think it smells like anything but wax.
In any case, I may have to try something to modify the way my car smells. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You guys need to look at your evaporator drain(under the car near the center "hump" (on each side of the "hump"). Make sure those drains are clean and can drain water from your evap. Also get a product that is designed for car's to kill smells and bad odors. Getting a black light isn't a bad idea either to see where the odor "sources" are. Kids can bring all sorts of goodies into a car. Do you know what hot coolant smells like ? Could be a leaking heater core(which is rare in BMW's) or a leaking hose(more common). Was your dash ever removed, for say an evap replacement - or airbag replacement ??? Dack

The smell doesn't smell like coolant but I can check the coolant level to see where it's at next time I'm under the hood. I did add a little bit when we got the car so if it's dropped any that may be a good indicator. Thanks!

The reason I asked IF you know what hot coolant smells like is bc most people don't. It usually smells sweet to most people. Best thing to do is get a coolant pressure tester... pump it up on a cold engine and come back in a few hours to see IF the pressure has gone down. IF it has, then you can move on in your diagnosis. Any dealer can also look up the warranty work... IF it was under two years ago... replacement parts still have a warranty(with labor!) if replaced at a BMW dealer. Dack

I'm actually impressed by their level of service as they were very accommodating when we had questions before we bought it. There is an issue with the windshield seal around the rearview mirror so I'll see if they can look into that as well. To be honest, I was a bit concerned about getting into a BMW since I've been a lifelong Honda fan but, other than the special Torx tools, it's not too bad to work on from what I've watched in several YouTube videos. In fact, after changing the oil and cabin air filter, I'm looking forward to doing some work on it...but, you know, not wishing for my car to break down. lol

I use Wurth foaming Evap cleaner.
You spray it into the drain tube. It foams up and fills the evap housing. About 5-10 mins later, the foam breaks down back into a liquid and runs back out the drain tube, bringing all the dirt/contaminants with it. |

I've been thinking this might be why I get a smell in my new-to-me 135i. PO had mice, after cleanup including Ozone Generator, and shop inspection reporting no further signs of mouse damage, it came back and I decided it smells kinda like burnt oil. Shop had found a small oil leak at the valve cover gasket, and will replace gasket tomorrow (and valve cover if it's got any issues). Hope that cleans up the smell.

I'm going to clean off the evaporator this weekend. I plan to remove the blower motor and spray the evaporator down with foam. After that's all cleaned out, I think I'll use an aerosol bomb to disinfect the vents.

I'm worried about just spraying blindly up the drain hose. Has anyone had any bad experiences doing this? I don't want the foam overflowing and running out anywhere.
