I have driven a 135i auto b4 but the salesman was with me constantly monitoring my speed, Police everywhere, but my son and I knew where to go test the second one I drove, that thing hauled ass. I just wish I could drive a manual. I really love my Civic Si's trans and clutch, EXCEPT for the sometimes notchy 3rd gear. Is the 135i manual OK without taking the valve out? I really don't want to mod the car at all, warranty reasons. 2 expensive to fix without a warranty.

^With the CDV, shifts are delayed, plus, prepare yourself for increased notchiness as the gearbox ages/breaks-in.

If I was to do the CDV mod, should the car have tranny problems I imagine I should put the original one back in b4 service, correct? But if the car is on the side of the road then what?

So without modding the CDV, the trans will get more notchy? Not better with break-in?

My experience; at 2,500 miles the CDV was removed, the gearbox was kinda' notchy, now, at 5,500 miles the gearbox is nearly as notchy as that in my 1971 2002. I'd like to say I have no warranty worries with the CDV removed...is a tech going to care, bother to check? I don't think so, but, who knows...:iono:

OK, but I don't know how a 1971 2002 feels? Is that good or bad?

1971 2002's had a Porsche gearbox, notorious for blowing the snynchros within a couple thousand miles, my 135 is there, shifting has become an exercise in patience, blip the throttle, let it happen, don't force it.

I promise you they will never know the CDV is modified or removed, it's about the last thing you should worry about when it comes to warranty concerns.

Pardon my ignorance here, are we talking about a stick? if yes, I'm interested in this mod as well, can I do it by myself or do I need a professional

Stick. If you are unsure about doing the CDV modification, go to a local, independent, BMW mechanic, that's what I did. I watched/supervised/helped the guy, it's not that hard, but, you must be familiar with the car, or, supremely proficient. These new-fangled automobiles aren't as easy to work on as, say, a 1971 BMW 2002, plus, unfortunately, I'm an old fart, mechanic-stuff is a young man's craft.

Should you choose the independent or DIY, please study/reference - http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6329 - cap off the hydraulic line immediately after disconnecting!

Good luck, the mod really is worth performing.

Cool, thanks alot. I am 46 with very neat/short hair, I dress up nice and that makes it easy to get to drive the cars alone. I either drive it alone or I dont consider the car, and I tell the saleman that.

Many to factor in...
  • looks, yes sales people size us up.
  • age (19 vs 40+)
  • have you been there before?
  • do you know the CA by name and vice versa.
  • Some ppl already have purchased from either that particular CA or make it a point to treat the CA as a real person.
  • related to the owner? (his son? his dad)
  • jedi mind tricks (i could not resist...)
Most of this is common sense when buying anything... Even just a smile can do wonders!

I agree its nice to take a car out alone, but I've never had an issue being able to push a car to test some of its limits.

In fact, with BMW dealers usually they encourage it. When I drove the 135 stick, the guy said "Pull over here and test out the zero to sixty. Just flip it around since we just drove through here and we know there's no cops."

The first time I ever looked at a Bimmer, the guy asked if I ever drove one before. I said no and then he says, "Well, let me show you a few things." Before I know it, he's got the car up to 85 on some back road and he's demonstrating how it corners and brakes. Believe you me, when it was my turn, I did about the same. It really sold me on the brand.

Hey guys, I know the 1-series have the same N54 found in the E9X variants correct? So that would mean the same ZF 6spd tranny?

OP - 6MT isn't something you get bored of
I've got the 6AT and it's nice to be able to drink water/juice and drive or eat a hamburger once in a while lol

also, if traffic is a concern to you, I don't know how much you like the 6MT in traffic....never really had one in traffic so I can't say...but my next car will definitely be a 6MT =) (or I can convince my brother to do otherwise!)

Suspect it is the same, would make economic sense on BMW's part.

The reason I drive a manual is that my wife won't. ; -)

The first one described was the one in Woodland Hills, CA.

The second one described was somewhere in the Milwaukee, WI area. It's been well over 10 years since I was there.

I totally agree, drive the cars, then you know what is best for you.

I have a vintage Porche across from me, yet the Porche owner still loves to stare at my AW/Coral BMW 135i! And I being a 1addict, tries not to stare back...it's rude... lol (when he is not around I go for joy rides ...i wish... dreaming..)

I just let my grass die, so I know every1's elses grass is greener (old house has to be reno'd... know any good contractors in the sauga area??? lol)

I got the stare today too from a Porsche Carrera 2 driver...it felt kinda good because I know I only paid 50k for mine when he paid damn near 100k, lol!

I drove a rwd CTS and an awd CTS, very nice car, great fit and finish, great interior. B4 the CTS I drove a Pontiac G8 GT, a great car for the money, also great quality. Then I drove the 135i automatic. All I can say is WOW. The 135i blew them away.
