I have inquired with the powers to be and am awaiting a response..
In the past there hasent been much luck with hardwear as part of a sub-assembly... for instance there was this bolt that was needed for a crash beam in a front door... bolt not available... had to get an entire door shell !!! I have some hope as Brembo is involved... in the past i was also able to get specs for stuff... ie pitch, shoulder, grade, length, torque etc etc.. stand by for more info... personally, i like taking the caliper off using theses bolts... it so much easier / cleaner

Ok boys and girls.... 2 avenues both came up with the same answer....... "you need what bolt?? (pause) (silence) oh boy, your not supposed to remove that one for service !!!! we dont have a source for that bolt....( cries in the backround) I still am waiting on the third source... (BMW proper) but i have a suspicion we are gonna be sh&t out of luck...... ill have my car in the shop tomorrow ( maybe) and ill pull one out and mike it up and see what stampings are on it etc etc etc .. Technically it is mearly a hex head shouldered metric cap bolt... i think all we need to do is confirm the grade and order some from MSC or Grainger keep standing by...

OK I got my response from BMW.
Part ( hex head bolt ) not available thru BMW as a seperate piece.. No part number, or part description available as they are supplied to BMW as a package. Sorry, thought i would get more better (???) news... I did not get to pull one and measure it as i got side tracked diagnosing a knock in my buddies s2000 that tracks with me... so if any one can post the dimensions ill do leg work and try to find a source.. I may have my car available for this on wed or thursday if no one responds.

I've had a few BBK and if I'm correct you try and never touch that bolt. Every one I've eventually removed had loctite on the threads making it tough, even on the bench.
The carrier bolts are easy to get to, just turn the wheel in. |

McMaster-Carr as well is a great source for bolts and etc. If you know the details on it almost guaranteed they'll have it. Tons of grades, coatings, etc. to choose from normally as well. Love this place.

You need a pitch gauge.. usually found in tap and die sets

You can also use a bolt that you know the thread pitch/count of... just align that bolt's threads onto the bolt you are measuring. The threads will interlace IF they are the same. This brake caliper bolt in question is most likely has a thread pitch of 1.5mm. But thats just a guess by me. M8 x 50(?)mm by 1.5mm |

Not necessarily. I've been looking for a switch to repair a coffeemaker, and the original switch is made by a company named Movleno in Italy. I could order from them, sure - 5,000 pieces minimum though. And jump through hoops to get set up as a customer in their system. Just have to give them my business's information.
Needless to say I'll be looking for a switch elsewhere. COuld be the same for Brembo. they may do it, certainly, and that would be awesome. But keep a plan B in mind, they may not sell to the general public. Also refer to an earlier post above: If you'd ordered from McMaster you'd have it by now. Just saying. Finding the size, length and pitch isn't that difficult. Get a high grade and your'e done. |

Q: for you guys with the broken caliper bolt head... this bolt holds the brake caliper to the spindle/hub right? So doesn't your brake caliper move around a lot then? I would think that is fairly dangerous! ?

It would move around under hard pressue/braking; but I didn't leave mine without anything.. I found a similar threaded Hex head bolt, with spring washers and was able to torque it down to 90lbs. Have not touched it since, other than to just check.. But it is a bitch, the spring washers were necessary to get the head out far enough to tighten, otherwise it will just sit in the caliper bolt hole loose.

With all of this talk about those bolts (which hope you get them), then what is the proper procedure to replace the brake pads? The procedure on the DIY point to remove those bolts for caliper removal.

i would venture to guess that although the caliper wouldnt move at first, it would put alot of strain on the other bolt, espically in spirited driving.. NOTE to all !!! only >>>> ONE <<<<< person broke one bolt and it was due to installation issue ( possible overtighten ??? ) the only reason that the rest of us jumped on the bandwagon is that we had concern as we all were removing the caliper in the same way... over and over more for track / street pad swaps... just wanted to be clear and not start hystreria..
