Has this forum ever gotten into the merits of DIY alignment? Past places I've been, this has been discussed in considerable depth. I've never done a four-wheel myself, but front-end alone is quite easy with a minimum of tools (and I'll do a better job than the kid running the alignment rack at the tire shop).

I promised myself I was leaving my car stock when I bought it last Fall. You guys are a very, very bad influence. Slippery slope...... trying....... not.........to...go........there.......

I do my own alignments now, and my only advice is be prepared to pay with worn tires if you make a mistake with the toe. There's really no reason NOT to do alignments yourself if you feel comfortable with other basic mechanical tasks like oil changes.

been heavily considering getting the pilot sport AS3's. How do you feel about them? Ever tried them in any winter weather. Sorry to threadjack

I have them as my intermediate tire.

They handle surprisingly well, and they are quite noisy.

A month after I installed them, I tried driving in 1" of snow. I thought I was going to die. And I teach winter performance driving, so I think I know what the hell I am doing when the white stuff hits the ground.

At least I was able to keep my hands warm from the constant glow of the traction control light.

I would recommend against doing a home alignment on our cars. The adjusters are extremely sensitive to very small movements. Even on our alignment rack it is tricky to get it exactly right. And if it is even slightly off, the car will be all over the road during hard acceleration.

thanks for your input. is it possible that the tires weren't "broken in" or whatever when you tried them in the snow? I've watched videos of people bossing the snow in them. Could just be our cars too lol

My gf's impreza has them, they are good enough for the awd to get traction in a lot of snow but you will float when going at any significant speed.

for an open diff 135i in the snow, I'd just go with a set of high performance snow tires and hope it doesn't snow much
