As the arguement goes.....

i DUNNO...

Would you rather trade-off some performance to have an authorized aftermarket kit installed. And get this, installed & warantied by the BMW dealer itself..!

DINAN will also have several stages avail, so exhaust and other aftermarket ^grades will be all engineered with each other in mind..!

I'd much rather take the Dinan product, provided gains were still reasonable for the price paid. For example, if their software added 20whp or $2,000, then it'd be unlikely they'd get my bussiness. However, if it adds more along the lines of 50rwhp like is rumored, I'd be more than happy to pay the extra money, and eat the 30rwhp deficeit in performance, so that my car will still be covered if it overheats during a BMWCCA Driver Ed, and fries cylinder #6!

I think (hope) that this car will be light enough that big power isn't required. I'd be more than satisfied with high 11-low 12s in the upper 1-teens, which should be doable with about 380-400rwhp, I'd expect.

That said, if Dinan released a turbo upgrade kit, I'd be all over it!

If Dinan did comeout with a package for the 135i with good power gains I will most likely go with them. I fear More and more BMW centers are catching on to modified 335i's with procedes, etc. and voiding warrentys.

how will you be paying for said 135i?

if your answer is something along the lines of "its my graduation present from daddy", then thats what is unfortunate. many of us had to work for our $$$, and find it sad so many children these days are spoiled rotten (ala MTV Super Sweet 16). If I became a multi-billionaire, I still wouldnt be buying my kids this type of car for their first auto. I'd at least make them first prove they are responsible and capable drivers.

If your answer is someting along the lines of "I started my own business 2 years ago and I have earned enough money to buy it myself" then congratulations on your early success, please try to avoid becoming a statistic of teens who mishandle cars that are too much for them, costing you the car and sometimes life/limb.

BACK ON TOPIC...

I heard that you could no longer get Dinan products installed at a certified dealer to retain your warranty and that they would be similar to any other aftermarket part maker, where all the parts are "install at your own risk, for off-road use only" etc. would be nice if its not true, but something i heard.

Good lord, when will it ever end??????

DINAN is NOT WARRANTIED BY BMW.

Never has, never will.

All Dinan has ever provided is their own 4yr/50k warranty that simply is the same time frame and mileage as BMW's. BMWNA actually even earmarks Dinan vehicles and puts a PERMANENT disclaimer on the vehicle history that the vehicle is NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY FOR THAT MODIFICATION OR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE.

I really wish people would stop spreading misinformation.

There is nothing wrong with buying a person like the 1er coupe as a graduation gift. If it was in my means I would totally buy my children the best. Its as if MOST children with nice things have to be shitty people. Thats not the case. During my freshman year of college 4 yrs ago a student had a Hummer H1 that mommy and daddy gave him. Hell, my roommate had a Lincoln Navigator with TV's and the works. In other words they are people you would love to hate until you knew them. Heres the point: What someone drives does not define them. So relax with the stereotypes.

^^^An inexperienced child does not need 300HP car period. Even if I had the means I would never buy my 16 year old a 40k car. What lesson does that teach them? I have no problem helping them out to pick up a $5k Civic or something.

problem is a lot of wealthy parents don't realise that just because you can afford a car for your kids means you should buy it for them. also, a college graduation car is WAY different from a high school graduation/sweet 16 car.

my only concern is driver experience. giving a powerful car to a young driver is asking for trouble. they don't pay out the a$$ for insurance for no reason. its because they make a lot mistakes. granted, there will always be a few responsible new drivers who not take chances and serve the car well, but they are few and far between.

even if you make 1mil/week, theres nothing wrong with buying your kid a more reasonable (ie, less powerful) rwd car and let them show they can drive responsibly first before buying them a 300hp rocket.

Stop!

My room mate in college had a 3 series and took it into the dealership and had them install a complete DINAN kit(exhaust, suspension, ecu). A year later something went wrong, loosen bolts I think and some damage was done...

All of it was covered by the dealership and he had a loaner for 5 days..!

When I bought my BMW, I was approached by the SA with a DINAN catalouge and asked if I wanted any "performance" products installed on my car.

Yes, DINAN actually warranties the parts, but it's seemless because the dealership handles all that stuff.

Your better off giving your kid a weekend trip to Skip Barber Racing School & a Ford Focus for a high school graduation.

Let them get the "racing bug", but a safe vehicle.... then while their at College, let them deal with that racing bug and let them persue their own need for speed.

I see so many people in here complaining about a 16 year old driving a 135i as their first car because they dont 'need' a '300hp rocket'. In fact, nobody here NEEDS a 300hp BMW. We simply love the car and want one. I highly doubt even 1/4th of the people here who decided that "16 year olds should not drive 135i BMW's as their first car" are not certified with a racing license. Everyone is entitled to their own cars and to driving them, whether parents should buy their children these cars depend on their individual families, not in a general catagory. Different families have different family values, I believe the issue of providing and choosing which vehicle for their offspring directly falls under that exact catagory. Are all teenagers deserving/responsible enough to drive a 300hp rocket as their first vehicle? Most definately not. Are some teenagers deserving/responsible enough? certainly! this topic is different for each family and I don't see the argument in a topic covering such wide range of families and individuals.. thats just my .02

ok if it is your first car please please please go to a bmw or skip barber racing/driving school. learn your cars characteristics in dangerous situations. that is my only beef with the topic i have lost 3 friends from having cars that were powerful and they did not have enough knowledge or sense of what to do when they were cut off, hydroplained and one street raced and had a semi back out or a loading dockon to the little strip the were at and he well you get the point. be careful and please don't end up a statistic.
on topic:
dinan is good but pricey. ilike there stuff for the e46 and e39 just give them a while to come out with something proven worth the $$$. if not AA is another good company. you have choices and if you are worried about a warrenty(i am) just wait your 4 years and save then go redonkiously all out and have a blast. diver school for all of you me included is the best way to have fun. maybe we should organize a track day when we get our 1ers and meet in respected areas/track. granted no one from cali has to drive to fl. or ny to fl or vice versa but get ppl together and if time permits go! just a thought!

i love dinan stuff its worth the money, the warranty is worth it. My car now has numerous mods and their is nothing more annoying than a after market part breaking and just being SOL. I'm also lucky to have a Dinan approved garage right next to my house.

Copied from Dinan website:

To obtain service under this warranty, the vehicle must be brought, upon discovery of a malfunction or defect in materials and/or workmanship, to the workshop of any Authorized Dinan Dealer, during normal business hours. Proof of purchase in the form of a lawful invoice is required. The Authorized Dinan Dealer will, without charge for parts or labor, repair or replace the defective Dinan component(s), as well as any original vehicle manufacturer’s component(s) that may have been directly affected by a Dinan component, using new or authorized remanufactured parts. The decision to repair or replace said parts is at the sole discretion of Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer. Parts for which replacements are supplied under this limited warranty become the property of Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer. In all cases, a reasonable period of time must be allowed for warranty repairs to be completed after the vehicle is delivered to the Authorized Dinan Dealer.

Just because it's seamless doesn't mean BMW actually warranties Dinan products.

THAT's the misinformation.

Try bringing a BMW with Dinan parts to a BMW service center that isn't associated with Dinan (which will soon be NONE). Good luck getting ANY work done on those items or related issues.

Trust me when I say that BMW does NOT WARRANTY Dinan parts.

The misinformation wasn't from you as indicated by the QUOTE I made of Garrett's post. Figured that made it pretty obvious who I was referring to. :iono:

His post clearly stated that BMW warranties Dinan parts which is not the case.

If they install it... Wether Active Autowerks, Shiv or a Dealer, the place you had it done at will also warranty it, because they sell DINAN products.

Thus if I had it installed at my dealer (which does sell DINAN stages), then if I had a any problems they would take care of of no questions asked. Wether or not it was a DINAN part or a BMW part that caused it. If it was DINAN, then DINAN would be paying the dealer for the warranty work done to my car.

Either way I don't care who gets billed, All i know is that my dealer took care of the whole thing..!
