Speculation regarding Dinan 2 flash

Good point, though I respect a company that takes the time to mount an engine to a dynopack and in real time test/tune an engine. Not to many companies have the resources or know how to do this type of engine tuning. That is grade "A" professional stuff.

Though, the disadvantage to this is the cost passed on to the short list of customers. I'm interested in what Helix is about to release and also found a thread regarding legendary Jim C. Those are 2 potential tunes that might offer a refined tune. But in the end, it is not always about performance/cost ratio. Sometimes it is about refinement and durability.

Procede is not even a consideration for me, because the possibility of multiple limp modes is unacceptable to me. Although, I have the luxury of time, since I haven't even ordered my 135i yet. So I can afford to see what other development enter the scene.

It appears that the piggy backs are the best bang for the buck. As long as you are happy with 60ish whp and no CELs

You can intercept return values from aspects of the engine and 'change' them to fool the base code. Dinan takes a different approach. It's value is in the eye of the beholder and that's one of the reason choices exist. I suspect that there's more to the Dinan code than the one example I pointed out though.

I can't tell you what's right or wrong - suspect they're all a little of both.

I have read about Jim c too. I wonder how the BMW warranty works with his reflash. At this time I am int in Helix attache with their FMIC and Rissracing catless or cat dp. With 93 ron heard the twin turbo can make little more than 400hp n 400tq with these mods. Put the new ps2's on n burn the rubber :headbang:

Jim Conforti has said the Shark Injector (ECU reflash) will not void your warranty! But that guy is a nut about doing things legit. I would expect his tune to be slightly under Dinans, but for around $1000.

I guess we will have to wait and see. I have time :smile:

i honestly don't see how someone can tweak a water pump and put a bigger oil cooler and sell it at 2k when everything from the intake to the exhaust is still factory.... you generally change how the engine takes in air and fuel, then how it disperses the waste in order to make more power.. not, turn the water pump on/off or adding 5 more rows of oil cooling capacity... it sounds like Dinan wants to sell an expensive boost controller...

having been in the game for 7-8 years i can tell you a stock car doesn't need a retune off the floor... you need mod the motor to some specific level before you throw the factory computer out... with my old evo, you needed a turboback exhaust, drop in filter, and a boost controller, THEN get a flash or piggyback...

it would be different if we were on the diesel forums talking about Power Programmers to gain 50-150 hp with just a tune.. the 135 is not ment to be the best at gas with a load, where these heavy duty trucks reach their real potential...

I know Jim C. He always waits to make sure that what he produces is top notch. He actually made some special ECU flashes for me in the past.

His prices are always very reasonable. If he makes a Shark for the 135 I would not hesitate to install it.

I should have been more explicit in what I was trying to say - amongst the many things that the Dinan tune does is tweak the operation of the electric water pump. I mentioned that because I don't think the piggybacks utilize that. I'm not defending the Dinan approach, just saying that by going after the base code there are many more variables to engine management at their disposal. Again - you pay for that in the cost of the flash.

Yeah, that is pretty much the concensus with anyone related to BMW tuning in the last 7 years. Problem is, Jim is a perfectionist and takes too long with his tunes, leaving an opening. Thats how these start-ups get their shot at being noticed. Fore me it's a waiting game, though I do like to speculate.

Again, I won't be ordering one until fall or even wait for an 09 model. But as of late I cannot get enough of this car... so discussing the finer details excites me. Kinda like when i was young'er!
