2nd gear launch

Oops, I guess I forgot to mention I was referring to launching in 2nd gear in the STEP. You can "launch" as I described even in just regular "D" in pretty much any car. Does it start you out in 2nd if you "launch" in DS? Don't know how the 135 responds in DS since I have not tried launching it in DS in our STEP. Didn't figure it wouldn't be any more benificial than just doing it in M2...

Yes, the kickdown is retarded quick. I have driven and raced many cars including autos and this thing is stupid fast. I don't care what the uneducated/inexperienced say, this is not just any regular auto...

That's awesome. I am so excited to get this car.

I can safely say that you will love it no matter what. 6MT or STEP, Sport pack or not, etc., etc...the car is just sweet. We may all disagree on things sometimes around this forum, but the awesomeness of this car is why we are all here...

Well today on our way to do our photoshoot my buddy driving a 6-speed and me in my crappy SLOW STEP were at a light and about to enter a 2 mile stretch on a semi-closed road. We decided to see if there was any noticeable difference between the two trannys from a dig up to the top of third. I launched quicker (starting in 1st) and by the time 4th hit I was well beyond a car length (probably closer to 2). So there, say he was a bad driver (which I know he is not), say he missed a shift or whatever, but the proof is in the pudding and I'll put money on the fact that most STEP haters out there probably never have driven this amazing transmission otherwise they'd probably have quite a different outlook.

Either they've never driven it or drove it in the wrong mode. You have to admit, D is nothing like DS/M modes...

Honestly I love MT, but like many I deal with alot of traffic and owning any MT under heavy traffic conditions is simply not enjoyable. I think the consistency of Step is great and the paddles makes driving it enjoyable. My main goal of this thread was to get your impressions of Launching from 2nd gear vs 1st gear in a step. I find 1st gear to be so short and unnecessary. This vehicle has so much low end torque I don't know if its physiologically but I feel launching from 2nd gear is smoother and more efficient (ie faster). I can ride 2nd all the way up to 60 and it feels really fast. your impressions????

Launching in M1 is probably going to yield slightly quicker times due to gearing obviously, but will require a shift within 1-2 seconds. It does go by very fast! Launching in 2nd is definitely more driveable and hence why BMW programmed the car to forget about M1 altogether (to save on the transmission). But I defintely notice more lag from starting in M2. So for ballz out acceleration start in M1. For everyday fun, just leave it in M2. My .02.

Im pretty sure as far as the quickest 0-60 starting in M1 would yield faster times. Anyone care to time it and post up the results?
