The E46 is way better. No comparison. I had two of 'em. In fact, I prefer the E46 interior design and materials to all after it (1 and 3 series). E46 dash is solid as a rock (and with a softish touch) with loads of character. E82 is cheap plastic with very strange curves, horrid door handles, and no flow front to rear. How is that dead on? E46 sport seats are great too. The E82/90 sport seats are nothing spectacular. Loads of differences...

I've examined the E82 interior layout and material quality...nicer than most cars in the price range but you can tell they cut back materials just a tad compared to the E46's. (Feel of the dashboard material and other plastics is probably the biggest difference).
As far as the layout and design, I'd say it has a pinch more of a Japanese feel than an E46's. Window switches on the door-pull was one of the first things I noticed. And the rear quarter glass no longer tilts out. The doors thunked closed with a similar feel to my old Acura TSX, but at least they kept the feature where the window creeps down when you open the door. (No idea what that's really called...) |

The rear quarter lights is an interesting situation - the B-pillar on the 1er is particularly thick and I'm wondering if, from a styling perspective, they could have pulled off an operable rear window and still be able to disguise the apparent width of the B-pillar.
PS - that being said, I wish they did operate, a flow-through opening rear window will reduce buffeting when the front windows are down. |

I like the interior of my 135i. Coming from an E46 325Ci which had a different dash design, the 1 series dash design is much nicer than the current 3 series flat Buick like dashboard. The design of the E46 dash was beautiful and is probably the best looking interior of any car i've owned.
Maybe that the Terracotta leather and Grey Poplar wood adds to the look considerably. And it's not as flat as the current 3 series. I do miss the central mounted window controls, but I'll get over that. I also dont like that I cannot tilt the headrests forward. I also, thought that the E46 body style could not be matched by the 1 series. Now that I've had my car a month, I like the looks of my 135i better than my old 325Ci. This may be a car I keep longer than I normally do, which is 90 - 100k. To steal a phase from a review of the 135i: This Car is That Good. |

Entry level for BMW maybe. For many of us, the 1er interior is an upgrade over our previous cars.
