I couldn't agree more but it's just interesting that it seems to delay the next failure on some cars but this one evidently went very quickly. My car is going back after 200 miles for the rough idle after update.

I think I've narrowed down what causes the limp mode to surface. If I gradually put my foot down and the car doesn't have to downshift a gear or two everything seems to work fine. When I get on it real quick, say, when the steptronic drops from 4th to 2nd the problem seems to occur right around that shift. I got on it today, and right after that drop down, I felt the car start to stutter so I let off and the car backfired. I'm going to do some more tests today and see if I can't figure out how to replicate the problem. |

My car is manual and it would just happen on hard acceleration BUT it would only happen under very heavy load. By that I mean I'm in 3rd but just below the torque band so the engine is pumping in more fuel than the output is using (or so it seems).

I just had my first HPFP failure at 6900 miles. On July 4th, CEL came on and car went into limp mode. I went to the dealer July 5th and made an appointment for the next day. Dropped off the car on the 6th and got a loaner 2010 328i (more on that in a second...). The SA called that evening and said they needed the car overnight to do a cold start in the morning per the service bulletin. Just got the car back today with a remanufactured 933 pump. According to the service invoice, the failed HPFP was pumping at 5.3 BAR and after 10 minutes 4.3 BAR. Anyway, it runs like a champ with the remanufactured 933. I suspect the problem was around for a while before the CEL and limp mode kicked in. It seems much faster now.
BTW, the 328i was one of the most boring cars I've ever driven. After each drive I felt empty. My Honda has more character. Thankfully the dealer got my 135 fixed quickly and the world is right again. Last edited by Squidbilly; 07-07-2010 at 07:10 PM.. |

So my 135i coupe had a 933 re-man put in July 6th, the car had 6900 miles and is a 2010 MY. I am still waiting for the receipt from the dealership to confirm what work was done-- they say some cars need injectors as well, but not mine. I'm not sure about the sensor.
The dealer tells me this is the most updated pump (Re-Man 933 sounds like re-manufactured, why didn't they call it a 953?) He also tells me I got new software installed. Let's hope this works, I feel the car is even more powerful and power delivery is even better since the repair, but I've only driven it about 200 miles. (The dealership put almost 100 miles on it "testing" the repair) |

wtzouris, funny that both of our pumps failed at 6,900 miles. I believe the 933 pump is the original pump fitted at production and the 943 was supposed to be the grand fix to the HPFP issue, but failed as well. Let's hope the re-manufactured 933 has upgraded internals. If not, we always have the 10 year/120K warranty to fall back on. I figure I'll keep getting pumps replaced until BMW comes up with a better pump.

I've had long cranks for about 6 months and finally in the past two weeks I had two episodes of a backfire followed by power loss and then at last a SES light last week in DS mode - threw 29DC and 2FBF codes. Took it in today - they didn't even bother to keep it overnight to test for long cranks and reprogram before putting in a new pump. My SA called me about two hours after dropping off to tell me that they were installing a re-manufactured 933 pump and reprogramming with latest software. He also said that the dealer is recommending an annual fuel injector cleaning service ($170) to help prevent build up that may affect the pump - he says that due to the "ethanol" in our fuel, it's really harsh on the hpfp's. He says that these rebuilt ones supposedly are better at handling the enthanol in the gas. - I may be fuelish (haha) but I went ahead and had that done today too. I have 14,700 miles on my May '08 build.
All I can say is "wow!" My 1er drives like new and for some reason the exhaust even sounds throaty-er - with the top down, what a nice purr! As an aside, I got a nice '08 335i sedan for a loaner and it was very pleasant to drive - plenty of pickup like the 135 but a bit tighter in handling - hardtop vs. my 'vert surely made the difference. I guess I've gotten so used to the ride of my 'vert that I haven't appreciated what you coupe guys enjoy everyday.

Well, at least my fuel injectors are cleaner now. We'll see how long this replacement HDP lasts. But it is frickin' incredible that a brand like BMW would have so many quality issues - I've had a couple thousand of dollars in warranty repairs performed in the past year on a car with less than 15,000 miles on it - new top, new fuel pump, new side view mirror, new tail lights, radio making loud noises when key isn't even in the ignition (I'm hoping the reprogramming now has solved that problem too) - not to mention the days of inconvenience in driving back and forth to the dealer. My Toyotas and Chevy haven't had any problems over the years; heck even my '73 MGB was less trouble than this 1er has been. However, with all of the troubles, I still love my 1er - I guess I really am a fool!

Trust me. You guys need to wise up and start calling lawyers. It does not cost you a penny win or lose. BMW has been taking advantage of us for 4 years, time to get serious folks.

I think the bigger news is that you've found a lawyer who will work for free...

Its a good thing most lemon law lawyers charge BMW not you. Common sense. I was absolutely fed up with this pos. Trust me do something about it early before its too late. If I had another 135i I would open the case and get on their ass after the first failure via certified letter. You need to remember that the last thing BMW wants to do is go to court. If they lose in court the cars title gets branded as a lemon.....good luck selling that.

I don't see how you can initiate the lemon law process after the first failure. IIRC it has to be 3 times for the same problem or a certain number of days in the shop within a calendar year. Also, what is the benefit if you leased the vehicle? I've always wondered how that process works since it's not technically your car.
Personally, I leased the car for this exact reason. If it proves unreliable they still have to take it back in 3 years... I think the people buying these cars are taking a huge risk unless they replace the pump with a Walbro.

You can legally open a case after the first incident of a known issue, in this case the hpfp. On a lease, they get you in a new one, or a different car. Trust me you if you ahve a case you never loose out and your money gets refunded.

So you have to front the money to the lemon law lawyer? Sounds fishy to me?
Do you know how to get a lemon law lawyer in the NYC area? |

Like I said before, there is no money out of your pocket. You win, the lawyer charges bmw, you loose, the lawyer and yourself get nothing. Google and do some research to find one that fits you best.

Sounds like a normal "contingency" arrangement. While the lawyer does not charge a set fee, he (or she) gets a percentage of the final settlement/award - usually around one third. But the client usually pays all legal filing/copying/mailing/administrative/etc. fees upfront.

Well, my fears have been confirmed. It's been around 350 miles since I had the new 943 put in, and I've gone into quite a few limp modes. After scanning today, I was greeted with multiple 29DC codes, some occurring as low as 3000rpm with what I would consider light to medium throttle application.
So, as far as I'm concerned, the 943 + software is not a fix. |
