Yes...in part. I'm using JB4 with a custom e85 back end flash. That in and of itself gave significant power gains. The exhaust setup had decent burbles to begin with (on just pump gas and standard JB4 tune), but I'm testing a new feature that is soon to be released on MHD which is specifically allowing N54 users to have the same burbles/backfire as N55. The thread can be found here..but be warned, there's about 15% useful information in the thread, with the bulk just being impatient complaints or off topic..haha. |

jimmie004 now that sounds really really interesting. I'm already using a MHD tune. Held off on the stage 2 tune because I don't need the extra power...Are you a beta tester or something for this new tune?
Wonder if it will make the same noises without E85. |

I wouldn't label myself as a beta tester, just happen to be local to another guy who does a LOT of testing and designing. He had it on his car but needed another n54 with a louder exhaust to demonstrate the sound better. The mastermind behind it all is jyamona with 3000GT MR being another guy helping him test things out. The type of fuel will have little effect on the sound..it has everything to do with your exhaust setup. You'll hear it regardless, it just might be quieter or louder depending on your exhaust. If you're running any kind of aftermarket exhaust, you likely already hear some pops/gurgles when you feather the throttle on decel. To the best of my understanding (so don't quote me on this)..What you're doing is essentially resetting the timer in the dme to inject fuel after throttle closure. The factory time is extremely short on the n54 which is why you only hear a few gurgles, if any. There are other ways to make the sound (one of which is to adjust your wastegate) but those are just hacks. This is actually programming the dme ppk tables to be identical to the n55 (or more/less depending on your liking). So it is true coding as though bmw did it from the factory. Basically what is happening with this option enabled is the timer to inject fuel after throttle closure in increased. There is a lot more that goes in to it, but I'm not the one to explain it with any shred of honest first hand knowledge. Couple notes in response to some other posts.. Yes this can be really loud, but if you ease off on the throttle and drive neighborly, you won't piss off your neighbors..in fact, they probably won't notice a difference. But, if you drive like a douche in your neighborhood, then this will point it out and every will hate you for it if they don't already. |

This is perfect. I can't wait to get it on mine. I drive a lot of cars for extended periods of time (part of my job) and my favourite has been the Jaguar F-Type R AWD. I remember cruising around downtown Toronto and just tipping in on the throttle and listening to the thing snap and pop. It was fucking glorious. Yes I looked liked a douche nozzle, but I don't care. It was worth it for the 1 week I had it - so I did it for as much as I possibly could.

Honestly, you should do both. PPK FTW. The golf tee mod takes only a minute to perform. It does not give any additional burbles and shit, just keeps the valve open all the time to make it a little bit louder under 3k rpm.

I have a 08 135i, will be installing the Jb4 tune tomorrow and want to dive in to the exhaust. What is the best setup to go with as far as brands? Thanks in advance.

For me that's the PE(Performance Exhaust). Its the most expensive frivolous mod - that I just could not live without! Its pure sex for my ears.

With my N55 i'm FBO with VRSF catless, OEM mids, and an aFe Mach force xp3 axle back. I don't have a clip but this is exactly what it sounds like, even though this guy has a much different setup.

^ Thing sounds like an RB26 with that setup, sounds nice!
Went and took a quick exhaust video since there isn't much with the BMW PE + downpipes out there. Probably going to a Berk setup since it has a more "classic BMW", M54ish sound to me personally. I like the BMW PE exhaust, its very throaty and suiting for a turbo sound, I just want a different sound when I think 6 cylinder BMW. Edit: did the Berk thing, too quiet.
