Owner made Track video: Francorchamps Belgium
Hey all?
I just got to Francorchamps this week end and we only had a gopro to film with, and the battery was dead, we only recorded 2/4 runs. First time with it on the track, be gentle with me... some data: 03'05"01 is the best lap we achieved, we were driving in mdm. The ps2 melted big time. I'm looking for something more serious. The MDM was useful most of the time except into a chicane (behind the black M3, passing with the CSL, you'll see) it really slows the car until your wheels are pointing straight. in a high speed curve, (5k rpm in 3d) we felt the car skidding a little (half a second and the mdm took care of it. Not sure we would have saved it. Anyways, I hope you'll like it. The song is Ratatat loud pipes remixed with mephis bleek. Enjoy

For someone to believe the above^^^ (stock 1///M destroying a stock E60 M5), might as well believe in the tooth ferry. Something must have been wrong with the M5 or he was sandbagging. Just look at the hundreds of videos of the E60 M5 beating a C63AMG handily (which here beats the stock 1///M, as it should). Or even better, get behind the wheel of a E60 M5 and especially at a rolling start you will see that few things other than exotica can touch it (and the new F10 M5 of course)

Need more convincing: take the law of transitivity. The E60 M60 pulls on the C63 every day of the week, and twice on Sunday. (stock to stock - there are a gazillion videos out there). M5 here is destroyed by the 1///M (it was not even close), yet the C63 beats the 1///M (as it should). So car A (M5) beats Car B (Merc), Car B beats Car C (1///M), yet car C beats Car A??? Sit behind the wheel of an E60 M5 and see for yourself what that car can do at high speeds from a rolling start (which this test was all about). It is not a contest. Track, 0-60 is a different animal where the 1///M will outshine, but here, sorry but FAIL.

Since you have driven both cars and I did not have a chance with the E60 M5 I refrain from arguing against you. However, your strong belief made me curious and I checked the data for M5. I thought some respectful tests done at the time would be more fair to judge the E60 M5 cause there are comparisons nowadays underlining how much better or faster the F10 is (by the way I personally couldn't like the new M5 much, I would take the E60) and I found that Autocar (I respect their detailed road tests) has some good data for the M5 from 2004 as well as their 2011 road test and data for the 1M. You can find both in internet easily and maybe u r already familiar with them so I am not attaching anything here. The relevant data is printed and sitting in front of me right now:
The acceleration: Till 60mph 1M is faster and they get even at 4.6s. at 60mph. After that slowly the M5 pulls away and the distance at 150mph is simply huge: the 1M reaches there at 31.3 sec. while M5 needs only 21 sec. Impressive stuff. Standing quarter mile 12.8 s. at 119 miles for M5 and 13.3 s. at 109 miles for the 1M. In gear times: 1M better almost everywhere. Brakes: 1M has better numbers. There is more performance data about the 1M than the M5 and I think it is kind of natural that the 1M would post better times on almost any track which we already knew from the press but I conclude that probably you were more right than I was and an acceleration race between the two with pro drivers in both should finish in favour of the E60 M5 IF we are talking about a race continuing after the 60mph threshold on a long straight. In terms of performance that seems to be the only area that the E60 M5 has a clear upper hand over the 1M. |

Bringing this thread back from the dead..
It's so hilarious to see all the dumb comments - "no DCT = fail" - "only 30 hp increase?!" - "relabel 135is, this is not an M car" - "underwhelming" 4 years later, this car just happens to become one of best praised BMWs... |
