Yeah, I need to change my vote. 2011 135i is -1 on the no issue and +1 on the failure. replaced it a while back but forgot about this poll.

2008 135i 6MT E88 with 97,000 miles. Previous owner replaced the water pump but not the thermostat. Thermostat was throwing a code when I bought the car in August 2021. I have since replaced the pump and thermostat while I had everything ripped apart for the turbo replacement job. I bought the least expensive genuine BMW parts I could find with the latest part numbers. Hoping to get another 75,000-100,000 miles before it needs any major work again.

2009 128i w/ 144k mi. Still original.
I do a decent amount of preventative maintenance (occasional coolant drain/fill, but never a true "flush"), and have replaced some other cooling system parts.

Hmm, I didn't even think of that when I did mine. It ended up coming out 6 months or a year later to do the belt and tensioner pulley up front. If one does take the fan out they may as well do both jobs at the same time (belt/pulley and water pump).

2011 1M, 62k miles
This is my third one - 335 N54, 135is N55, and now 1M N54. You learn to expect it around this mileage. You can anticipate it by listening to the telltale signs: aux fan continually kicking on high, and WP whirring after shutoff (not simply cycling).

Early 2011 128i (04/2010 build), ~190,000 km (118,000-ish miles). Pump failed last week. Might get around to changing it this weekend.
Funny story...this car acts like a jealous girlfriend. I had just picked up $600 worth of parts for one of my other cars (Lexus IS), and was on the way home when the 128's water pump shat the bed. She was jealous. Last year, when I picked up a new snout seal, oil, and belt for the supercharger on the Mustang, the BMW decided it wanted a new MAP sensor. She was jealous. |

One thing the poll doesn't tally is how many changed their water pumps preemptively. I recently purchased a 2011 128i E88 with 95,000 miles on it and replace the pump and thermostat while I was having some other work done just to have one less thing to worry about as I am planning to take some lengthy trips. From reading various threads it seems quite a few people don't simply wait until it fails.

2010 125i. at around 140kkm i would get errors for communication for waterpump and thermostat. tested waterpump, fine....changed it this year at 180kkm. fan started running a lot more considering i never hear it so then it had to be done asap. i do around 10kkm a year. lasted long!

Here to report my 2013 N55’s electric water pump went out at 85,650 miles. She was just coming up to temp on track (I was doing some sight laps) and she got really hot really quick. No warning. Blew coolant all over the engine bay, nice. Scanned codes, lo and behold I got 378F (engine coolant pump: missing). Towed it to my guy at an Indy shop and had it and the t-stat done along with some other work. I can’t remember exactly how much it was, but it was spendy

My 2009 128i had 227k KM (141k Miles) and was on the original water pump before the car was involved in a collision. Had no signs of going bad either.
I am currently looking at purchasing a 2012 128i M sport, seller says the water pump went at 177k KM or 109k miles. |

2012 135i N55 with 53,500 mi. Got yellow water temp warning, fan running full speed, and soon after got red warning and car went into limp mode. Had to get it towed home. Pulled codes:
- 378F electric coolant pump missing - 38A4 intelligent battery sensor (IBS) missing Replaced the parts myself with a Pierburg aluminum housing water pump and a Wahler thermostat for $400 altogether. |
