I have a 2011 335i Coupe Loaner car (Auto) while my 135i is in for some recalls. Some quick comments about N54 vs. N55 that I've experienced.
The N55 feels more responsive in the lower RPM range (below 3000 rpm) in terms of initial response/thrust at the first second you are on throttle (after not being on it at all, aka, no boost). In terms of overall thrust however, the N54 feels stronger (once turbos are spooled) from around 2500-5700 rpm. Anything above 5700 rpm, the n55 feel ways stronger and pulls in a more linear fashion than the n55 (obviously due to the differences in turbo setup where the n54 more quickly feels like boost is being tapered). Just my experience and opinion FWIW. |

if the torque is so good why the 335d sucks at the quarter mile?

it takes a little more that an impressive torque band to go down a track. other factors effect 1/4 mile and acceleration times such as weight, gearing in transmission and third member, power band of the motor compared to gearing, and the most important part, the nut behind the wheel. Look at the 335d times from 30-50/50-70, and you will notice that this car is relitively quick compared to it's competition. No hard feelings, and just my .02 cents worth!

I just picked one up last weekend (135i/N55/DCT), and I am waiting to hear results too. I don't think I will do anything to my car other that a Dinan stage I tune when they become available, and a drop in air filter. I'm still breaking the car in, but I am still impressed with the effortless acceleration of this car along with the lack of drama when it happens. I'm sure that will change when I start putting the spurs to this car!

The quickest recorded time I've seen for a 335d is 13.8@101mph
The 335i by comparison runs any where from 13.3-13.5@104-106mph depending on the source. I think the original argument was about torque being the most important factor in acceleration but the reality is that "torque" is only part of the equation. An automobiles power to weight ratio is a far better predictor of acceleration. |

I have read post of '11 135i W/DCT going down the track in 13.2-13.3 for the 1/4 mile.... I think Shiv@vinsu quoted 13.3 as what his car with DCT could do stock. A good tune has got to put this car in the LOW 13s or high 12s... but it's just bench racing at this point. Am very curious to see a customer car with JB3 or Vinisu quote 1/4 mile times with tunes only. Really interested to hear the same info with GIAC or DINAN too.
