I change the oil every 4k miles since I don’t run synthetic however don’t the new 3 series have a sensor that tells you when to change the oil based on miles driven, cold starts, etc? Again I’d just change the oil anyway as I’m not comfortable with that but since Grant’s friend used it as a long distance driver its entirely possible the 24kmiles was adequate according to the computer onboard. And wouldn’t the manual say the computer will tell you when to change the oil?

Its not like you can check the oil yourself in your 335 as is doesn’t have a dipstick.

Every BMW we have ever owned has a computer in it that tells you how long until your next service interval. Sometimes it's 8,000 miles sometimes it's 10,000 miles. We just follow that computer. I am confused as to why BMW would put the computer in the car if it were going to damage it. I understand the free oil changes but the computers used to be used when they did not offer free oil changes on my moms old 3 series convertible. I don't know I usually change my oil at 5k miles but if the computer said it wasn't necessary I would probably just go with that since BMW engineers know more about the car then I do.

i am just curious as to what kind of sensor they could use to detect oil viscosity and predict necessary oil changes

A computer doesn't change the physical properties of oil or the filter.

You can get a basic understanding of the 1 series coupe from these 120d review but they really aren't the same cars. The only thing they share is the 1 series moniker, the interior, and the headlights. While the reviews establish a standard that the 1 series Coupe has to at least meet or beat, you can't really compare European and American standard cars. If you folks read the press release there are a bunch of things different with the 1 series coupe.

I think vetts have something like this

but bmw's is simple math on engine temp, rpm, etc etc, all factors that determine oil life
