M1 was and should always be a supercar from BMW, not a car that is to be at the bottom of the M Family. They should seriously consider using the tii designation for a car that is supposed to be the successor of the 2002. Even though the original M1 was a failure and built by Lambo, it was a BMW project. As much as I would love to get my hands on whatever they name it, it honestly believe that it's not fair to alter the history of the company just to sell a few more cars.
My best name option would be something like BMW M135/M135 tii as they did with the M6 in the 80's, now that they don't mind the ridiculously long name, i.e. BMW Z4 sDrive35is. Please don't get me wrong, I'm a BMW purist.

I think that after all the crap they said about the 1-series being the continuation of the 2002 they should use the tii badge... and even if it uses M components, using a normal production engine and tweaking it for more power is cheap....all true M cars should continue to have naturally aspirated engines... Every time I talk to people about this new M1 (because I talk about cars alot, thats what losers do with their loser friends) I refer to it as the 1 series M coupe.... calling it the M1 feels extremely wrong to me... probably because when I think M1 I think of a supercar, and now they are wanting to use that powerful badge on the BABY M car... and if they do call it the M1, bringing out a tii afterwards would add to the confusion...which would be more powerful? the M1 obviously but why? tii sounds so much cooler.

Most on here are spot on, it's an M car in the 1-series family, it should be called M1 for constintency sake.
If and when BMW introduces their new "Supercar", the fun (debate) will begin again. How about bringing back the 8-series as the flagship beast when that time comes? Just a thought |

Who should we keep happy? The masses or a select few? The masses would appreciate a consistent "M1." At least the group here on 1addicts.com

Think about it, how many people in the target market for an M1 were even born yet? If you say the target market age is 25-35, only half of those people were alive when the original M1 was sold. And of that half, how many know what an M1 is? I personally was born the year the M1 was killed, and I didnt even know what it was until some classic BMW fans on here started posting about it. |

who owns a 1 series and doesn't know about the old 2002....tii would be more consistent with their "bringing the 2002 back to life with a 1 series" advertising that they used to get us to buy the 1s in the first place... I guess I wouldn't care so much if they develop an engine that is unique to the new M1... like all the M3 and M5 have gotten through the years... of course they need to sell more cars so they are just going to keep taking shortcuts to make money, messing with serious business... money got involved

As someone who is very new to BMW, from a sheer marketing perspective I think M1 makes the most sense for clarity's sake. If M3 is the M variant of the 3-series and M5 is the M variant of the 5-series, why the heck not call it the M1, other than nostalgia? Nostalgia is nice, but marketing sells cars, and now that I am very very into BMW, I would love to see them be as successful with a new 1-series M car as they can be!
EDIT: The more they sell, the more they can put in the war chest to solve HPFP issues! *ducks* |

I say use tii badge...
I had a 1972/3 2002 tii when I lived outside of Amsterdam for 5 years back in mid 80s....loved that car. That was its heritage so I say make the link solid with name too!

If it's a 1 series that's given the full ///M division engineering, then it should be called an ///M1. Simple! To call it anything else, just to accommodate history, would be silly.
Besides, the new ///M1 will outperform the "original" in every way, right! Any BMW supercar should be called ///M10, and in fact I think BMW trademarked the term "M10" about 3 years ago.....

If a "new" version of the original M1 is on BMW's potential future build list, they should definitely NOT call THAT car an M1. That would be more confusing than confusing the (very) few people that even know what the original M1 is. Does that make sense? Any potentially new customers coming to the BMW brand would be confused as to why the M3 is an M version of the 3 series, the M5 is an M version of the 5 series and the M6 is an M version of the 6 series, but the M1 is a super-high end car, not an M version of the 1 series...
I think the M version of the 1 series should definitely be named the M1. Any "new" version of the original M1 that may or may not ever be built should find a new name. How about M1!11
