Excellent!!! You do nice work. Seems you had a smoother time than I did. Every easy job fought me and the harder jobs were easier than i planned . Lol.
Anyway congrats and glad you got there with no leaks or problems. I learned saving $500 on new oil and coolant lines cost me $1000 in labor to fix it. Lol. I'm happy you got a chance to run the car, before all the other work starts. Your base tune seems to be a little more aggressive than mine. He started me out really conservatively. Waiting on my 1st revision. Again great job and great documenting. Thanks |

I will say that I definitely notice a difference in the stability of the car above 100mph with the wing. They are proven to be effective, and I plan to make good use out of it. As for the R1, it is a 2011, and it's my 6th motorcycle. I've had it a little over 3 years now I believe, and don't plan on ever getting rid of it. I bought it in WA with a little over 3k miles, and it has around 15k now I believe. It has a BMC Race Filter, Titanium Headers, Coffman Racing Slip on, Giles Tuning Rear Sets, Quick Shifter, XPlaneR1CustomTuning ECU Flash, Braided stainless brake lines, SMOG Block off plates, Airbox Mod and some other things. I use it to commute to work every once in a while, or to cruise with my wife and her Yamaha Bolt. It is an absolute rocket, with somewhere around 200whp. It has definitely changed my opinion of what "Fast" really means.

My base tune isn't actually as aggressive as it sounds. I think target boost was around 16-17psi. But the car slightly overshoots target and hits 19-20psi on top end. Something I am hoping can get worked out in revisions. The only other thing I can think of is that when I adjusted the wastegate after moving it over to the PS2, the vacuum gauge I used wasn't completely accurate, and I may need to re-adjust with a better gauge. Waiting to hear back from my tuner to see what they think.

I agree with everything else in your post but you may want to check this figure because it's an extraordinary claim. A stock 2011 dynos around 150 at the wheels. Don't get me wrong that's still ridiculously fast on a vehicle with an all up weight of ~600lbs but you will not get 200 hp without extreme measures like nitrous, forced induction or total rebuild with different internals. Reflash emissions delete airbox and exhaust will not get close. Between 160 and 170 is more likely.

More updates!
Still in the process of revising my tune with Wedge. I am on the 2nd revision now and the boost curve is starting to smooth out. Still blown away with how hard this thing pulls, and how the stock clutch is miraculously holding the power. The radiator and oil cooler were great choices! After cruising around for a few hours in 85 degree weather, everything was still plenty cool. Oil around 210-215 and coolant between 190-205.
Been too busy to install the clutch, flywheel, differential or control arms yet.. But I received my RTD Shifter and Blackline Taillights, so I spent Christmas Eve throwing both of those on! I had to trim the factory shifter rubber and foam surrounds to get them to fit properly, but I wanted to make sure that they both went back on! Definitely don't want an open hole around my shifter for dirt, water or fumes to get in. The RTD shifter is night and day different even compared to the short shifter and bushings I was running prior. It feels very secure, and clicks very clearly into each gear without hesitation! Love it!

I apologize for the lack of updates over the past few weeks. Christmas/New Years were busy for me and we had family/friends visiting from out of town!
The car is doing great! I haven't installed any of the other parts yet, as I am still waiting for an engine support bar to arrive from Harbor Freight, as well as an AR Designs Diff Nut Wrench so I can swap the LSD in. Once those last few things arrive, I will get the clutch, flywheel, LSD, and control arms all done. As for the PS2 and tuning, everything is coming along great! About a week after installing the turbo, I came out to the garage one morning and noticed a small puddle of oil directly underneath the turbo.. Upon further inspection, the oil feed line going into the turbo was leaking oil.. This meant that I had to pull the entire turbocharger out, and replace the O-Ring. I had a friend visiting from Washington, and we knocked the job out in about 8 hours. It appears I must have pinched the brand new O-Ring when installing the new lines on the PS2. Here's what we found; I wasn't too happy about having to pull the entire turbo out again, but it had to be done. It was definitely quicker the second time around though, and she is now leak free! I am on revision 4 of my custom tune from Steven at Wedge Performance. The car is doing great, and things are running extremely smooth. The tune is targeting about 19psi to redline, on 92 pump gas. This will be my daily tune, and eventually I will get another tune made for E50 once I get somewhere that has E85 easily accessible. The oil cooler and radiator were great decisions, as the car is staying at perfect temps even after numerous WOT pulls in this Hawaiian heat. Waiting on the next revision from Wedge to continue the process, but I feel it is getting close to complete now. Will post more updates when I have them! Should be receiving an order from ECS today or tomorrow, containing a BMW-Performance Alcantara Shift Boot, E-Brake Boot and Handle, and BMW-Performance Shift Knob. After I get those installed, I will be placing an order for a custom carbon fiber steering wheel and interior trim pieces from Nelson Racing Wheels. Austin

Wow the dreaded o-ring. Happened to me twice lol.
Glad you had some help getting it fixed. If I had help I would have fixed it myself too. Glad everything is going well!!! When I did my last 3rd gear pull, my car was flying by the time I shifted to 4th, it was a little scary on not the smoothest road. All I could think about was " i need stickier tires, stiffer springs, better bushings, tighter front end. Lmao!!! It never ends. |

Wedge requires me to supply two 3rd gear and two 4th gear datalogs per revision. Top of 4th is over 140mph.. 140mph on the poorly maintained roads here in Hawaii really gets the adrenaline going. I highly recommend some upgraded rear subframe bushings, and coilovers once you're ready. Those combined did wonders for the stability of the car. Austin

Some more bits for the interior came today!
• BMW Performance Shift Knob (Really happy about how this looks on the RTD Shifter). • BMW Performance Alcantara Shift Boot • BMW Performance Alcantara Parking Brake Boot Also received some new transmission mounts, and the rear differential nut wrench that I need to install the Quaife LSD! I will start the LSD install tomorrow. Also going to throw on the new transmission mounts, and Turner Upper Rear Spring Mounts. The Spec Clutch and Flywheel are the next big project after that! I am on Tune Revision 7 from Wedge now. Things are getting really dialed in at this point. I am going to schedule a dyno day for March, as everything else should be installed by then. Loving the car!

How's the RTD shifter been? That's definitely one on my wishlist. RTD + new trans mounts have to be sublime paired together. I think it would look a bit more "clean" if you put some black vinyl over the lever, just to get rid of the logo, IMO. Looking forward to the rest of your progress.

Today was a fun day!
Got the Quaife LSD installed, along with the Rogue Engineering Transmission mounts. The LSD install was relatively easy. Everything came out smoothly, and once I got the diff lined up, it lifted right back into place. Got everything torqued to spec, and now I'm waiting 24 hours for the RTV on the cover to cure before I refill it with diff fluid. I'll go for a drive tomorrow and update you guys on the results!

As I arrived at work today, I realized that I've put about 750 miles on the car since the turbo install, and I wanted to take a minute to share some thoughts.
Pure Stage 2 Turbo - Bottom line, this turbo changes the feel of the car drastically. With the stock turbo, I would find myself shifting at around 5,000 RPMS in an attempt to stay in the power-band, considering that the stock turbo would fall on its face at anything above that. Now, power-band is quite literally, the entire rev range.. On my current tune revision from Wedge, we have it targeting around 18psi. The car will hold this to redline, effortlessly. I never knew this engine would be so capable, but this turbo changed everything. Low end spool is almost identical to stock, and full boost is on around 3500RPMS depending what RPM you are at when you roll into the throttle. All in all, this is hands down the best mod I have done to the car. No question about it. Pure has revised this exact turbo a few times, and I feel like the current model is near perfect. Mosselman Oil Cooler / CSF Radiator - I have spent numerous hours in stop-and-go traffic, and conducting back to back WOT pulls while out datalogging since installing both of these components. The oil cooler and thermostat housing not only look fantastic, but they are a great upgrade over stock. I chose this kit specifically because of the fact that it maintains an internal oil thermostat in the factory location, avoiding the need to add a thermostat inline like other kits require. The oil temps now stay solid around 210°F once completely warmed up, on an 80°F day here in Hawaii. The hottest I have seen it go after numerous WOT pulls, was 216°F. The oil cooler itself is both thicker and taller than the factory core, and it has a higher fin density than the OEM unit. The radiator fit perfectly, even though it is a bit thicker than the stock unit. The fan/shroud took a bit more massaging to fit back into place, but everything lined up after some careful maneuvering. Coolant temps are now rock solid. I also replaced all coolant lines, water pump, thermostat and coolant all at the same time, so I imagine those helped as well. I run the "sport" cooling option through MHD, and coolant stays steady around 200-220°F. All in all, this mod provided peace of mind, and stability during hard engine use. RTD Shifter / DSSR - This shifter lives up to all the rave. Next to the Pure Stage 2, this is probably one of my favorite mods currently on the car. Previously, I was running an upgraded DSSR, Short throw shifter, and upgraded shift bushings. It felt good, but there was still some slop in the shift feel, and sometimes 1st gear would take two attempts to get into. After installing the RTD Shifter and DSSR, shifter feel is addicting. The "click" sensation and sound that is produced when pushing the lever into gear, is very confidence inspiring. There is almost zero slop in the lever once in a gear, and everything just feels so much more direct. You do have to apply a bit more force to the shifter compared to stock, but this is because of the tension spring and design as a whole. I actually prefer this over stock, as it requires you to be more attentive and active when shifting. Quaife 3.46 Limited Slip Differential - I went with the 3.46 ratio over the stock 3.08 to hopefully assist in acceleration at lower speeds, before the turbo was completely spooled. I can confirm that this change has definitely helped with that! As expected, RPMS are slightly higher at any given speed. At 60MPH, my RPMS are about 300-400 higher than they were previously. This is noticeable, but not an issue by any means. This change is definitely justified with how much quicker and effortlessly the car seems to accelerate from a stop/low speeds. I find I don't have to use as much throttle as I did previously, and the engine simply doesn't have to work as hard. The only issue I have ran into with this change, is that the DME now recognizes 4th gear as "3rd gear", and 5th gear as "4th gear" when datalogging. This is due to the car using wheel speed and RPM to determine what gear it is in. I have discussed this with my tuner (Steven at Wedge Performance) and it is fixable with an adjustment to the Gear Calc Tables in the DME. The next tune revision I receive should remedy this. It is only noticeable when reading the datalogs, and does not affect driveability at all. But still, something worth noting for anyone else considering the same upgrade. I still have the 1M/M3 control arm kit to install, as well as the Spec clutch and flywheel. However, since the stock clutch is still holding the power, I am in no rush to install the clutch. I may stay on the stock unit until it finally decides to retire itself. I plan on doing a dyno day once I have completed my tune revisions with Wedge. Should be done in a few more revisions I think. All in all, the car has been completely transformed by the recent changes, and I am in love with it all over again. If anyone is considering similar mods, I can promise you they will be worth it. I will keep posting updates as I have them, but for now, I am just going to enjoy the car! Austin

Like what Petro135 said, great write up. My 1er is also equipped with an MFactory LSD, and some M3/1M suspension bits. Only a few more months until it's acceptable enough to enjoy some back roads in MN, this thread makes me miss ripping around in my car!

Through my last revision, they were able to correct the final drive ratios in the DME to account for the new LSD. The car once again shows gears correctly when datalogging.
