Quick comparison
Just a couple shots with the phone set on the mirror. 135i quarter vs 1M quarter.

Go for it

I don’t see why not. It’s been done. You would just section it differently at the top. Possibly along the body line like we’ve seen in other builds.

LH wheelhouse
Got the left side wheelhouse welded on.
First two pics are fit up and weld prep. Second two are post welding. Next two are welds cleaned up and scuffed for paint. Last is simply a gratuitous shot of the right side with the quarter hung.

Interesting. I can't say I've seen it done on an E88 before. I'll have to look more into it. Structurally, I'd have thought it wouldn't be wise. Not sure if BMW gives a sectioning recommendation like many other companies.

Been busy doing other stuff. Got the majority of the left side cleaned up and ready to weld. Pics aren't very exciting I guess.
This is my first post using the Bimmerpost app. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Seems fine for posting. But, not that great for pictures.

Yes, I know I’m slow.
Lots of weld prep and a little painting of the inner stuff this past weekend.

looking good. quick questions, for those areas with bare metal, is there any concern of rust after the welding is complete. I know the welds will be painted or sealed or have some sort of protection, but I always wondered what about the bare metal between the two body panels that cant be covered with paint. Or is that not an issue?

Areas between panels that can’t be accessed once assembled are sprayed with a weld-thru zinc rich primer before assembling. Nothing is left bare metal. I posted a pic of the primer somewhere earlier in this thread. |

How hard was it to get the roof off? I would love the carbon roof, getting the glass out is not a problem for me but cutting the roof off seems like a daunting task.... I see you drilled the spot welds, was it difficult to separate roof skin from the car? What else do you need besides the glue and carbon roof?

You can drill or grind the spot welds. I drilled most of them. It’s a cleaner process than throwing sparks all over the place with the die grinder. There’s some sections that are glued too. Have a good heat gun handy for those. Go back and look at my pics where I’m talking about the tabs that the drip rail moldings attach to. I feel that they’re important to retain. As built, they’re part of the roof skin. If you just cut all the welds and remove the roof, you lose them along with the correct way to attach the moldings. I basically made them so that they are part of the side rails now. You’ll need a new headliner as well as the center roof bow if yours is/was a sunroof car. The shark fin will need to be re-attached. So, plan for that as well. BMW doesn’t sell the attachment tape separately.

Test fitted the rear liners and the new (to me) wheels this week. I’ll be tinkering on the car more this afternoon.

I’m basically taking the summer months off on this project. It’s just too damned hot in that garage currently. Although, I am about to change that little problem for good.

still here
Well, I'm back to work on the car.
Most of the pics I've taken haven't been all that share-worthy. But, I'll post up what I've got.” I nailed my right eye pretty bad this last weekend with a piece of shrapnel while working on it. Had to get it dug out of my eye by the eye doctor on Monday. Was back in the doctors office today for more eyeball rust removal. Yes, I was wearing safety glasses. But, the little bastard snuck underneath and nailed me anyway. I've now ordered myself a nice set of safety goggles to prevent future eye damage. Wear good eye protection kids.
