The car isn't registered or neither passed a "control" in Germany ?
So, the car is freshly imported, how can you drive it in Germany. Did you pay the Taxes when you imported it ? Can you tell me the whole story, I think I don't get it (For the pm function, I searched a new member area to present myself and post messages, but it seems the forum doesn't have one.) |

We fall under NATO SOFA(Status of Forces Agreement) so we have certain tax free privileges, like buying a US spec car's tax free over here or buying certain goods w/o (having to pay)the German 19% tax(MwSt). We get German (cover)plates but we have nothing to answer to the German TUV or tax man or Polizei. We simply pay our yearly registration fee's and get a German tag and have to go thru a yearly safety inspection on base(thru the Army or Airforce). IF we sell this "tax free" car to a EU citizen... they have to go thru the importation process just as IF they bought a US car in the USA and imported it to Germany. Only the car has never left Germany. Hope that clears it up for you. Dack |

That's a nice process you have there... why can't we do the same in France...
Pay our american cars without taxes... and modifications to be "Euro-compliant"... It looks like it will not be so easy to buy a car in this "state" |

And where we don't pay German taxes on our USA specification "German" car, we do pay taxes once imported into the USA...so either way a tax man gets us...but at a much reduced rate.
So if you are interested, I know BMW 135s built in 2011 here in germany are selling for €35000-€45000 euros depending on options. I'll give you a great deal.

Yes, it depends on the state you register the car in, whether you do or do not have to pay any tax to register the car. I've heard some states waive the tax IF the car has been registered to you for more than one year. Some states waive the tax IF your still active duty. And some want their $$$ now! Btw... when you ship your car back to the states, be sure to get the USAEUR shipping ("QQ") tags. Most states allow you to drive on the USA QQ tags for a few months or even up to one year.

Yes.
For instance in Maryland it's 6% of the NADA loan value. If you paid tax on the car in a previous state you get credit for that amount (such as if your previous home state had a 3% tax you would then pay 3% to MD). If the taxes in the previous state were equal or greater than MD you pay a flat fee of a couple hundred dollars. They get their money one way or another... Kentucky is also 6% but the fee if you've already paid another state 6%+ is less than MD. After doing some estimating it looks like I'll be writing a check for around $1300 to bring my car back.

This. Thread refuses to die... so I might as well adds something more to it... for anyone importing a car into Germany or if you buy a new or used car in Germany... you can buy temp tags for your car.these are the long German tags but they have a yellow stripe on the right side edge of the tag. These temp tags are only good for a few days or maybe a month, they also include insurance with it. I think a five day tag runs about 130 euros, any German DMV or KFZ Zulassung can issue these tags. They can also issue the ED export tags as well. :-) Dach
