The Dimply Plugs are really worth it. ($35) Its a very string magnet and it hasn't fallen apart like the UUC one. Its also about five times stronger than the UUC unit. The amount of metal that the magnet pulls out of your oil is amazing. So its worth it to me.

Took the time this afternoon to perform a routine oil change as I turned over 65,000 miles this past weekend. As some added insurance, I will be following 5,000 intervals while I own the car. I also took this opportunity to replace the OEM oil drain plug with the Dimple Plug I recently picked up -- definitely interested to see what this has collected over the next 5,000 miles.

It was quite hard to see considering that oil was on the plug itself and I tried to be gentle wiping off the oil that remained coated to the magnet, but I'm sure there was probably the dust that you speak of on there that came off when lightly wiped by my rag. Regardless, feel better about it being on there than the OEM plug. Thanks again for the heads up and I'll continue to check back in as I work through future oil changes.

Couple year later update, still pretty sure this thing is 100% snake oil. It catches almost nothing, but perhaps more importantly I don't think it does anything the filter does not. There are only a few contaminants that are magnetic anyway, plenty of non-magnetic metals among other things.
he filter gets both the magnetic and non-magnetic stuff. I just don't see what even finding stuff on the plug proves, probably just stuff the filter would catch anyway. The magnet is one small spot in the bottom of thee pan, nothing is forced past it. Magnetic force drops off incredibly fast with distance (1/R^3). No matter how strong this this is it will only pull magnetic particles towards in in a very small hemisphere around it. I wouldn't buy one again unless it was for a small iron engine with no oil filter. I think it's silly, right up there with acupuncture. If I has spent more than a few minutes thinking about the physics and engine operation at play I probably could've save myself $35.

I have had one for my engine oil pan and another one for my manual transmission.
Both pick up metallic dust at every oli change. I can confirm this has been the case at every oil change I have been doing in the last couple of years. Its easier to see if you wipe the drain bolts down with a white paper towel. Its obvious that the magnet will not attract particles that more than a few inches away, but will eventually do some of the pulling while the car is at rest, etc. For the engine oil pan, I see the magnectic bolt as additional protection to the filter. For the manual Tranny which has no filter, I think the bolt plays a more important role. Full disclosure, the car sees a lot of track abuse, so perhaps my use case and wear pattern are different than yours.... Quote:

In any case, what is important to know is how much of the metal is NOT collected by the magnetic drain plug. It is very possible that the few mg of metallic dust on the magnetic plug are negligible compared to the amounts floating in there and collected by the oil filter. Frequent oil / filter changes are the best way to get rid of them By the way BMW maintenance experts like Mike Miller suggest frequent oil changes (break-in at 1200miles and then every 10K miles) because of the amount of metal particles in the engine oil. Here is a telling quote from his BMW Lifetime maintenance schedule v03.13:"Oil analysis has shown the engine and driveline oils in new modern BMWs are literally full of metal at 1,200 miles..." |

OTC (5911) Drain Plug Pro Magnetic Drain Plug Remover
Just an FYI post... for my next oil change on my 135i I plan on using this tool. I think it will make my next oil change a lot easier and worry free of burning my hand when I remove the oil pan plug.

Dackel approved. I also love my Dimple Drain Plug. Another nice tool to have is this green form-a-funnel... I jam it up between the belly pan and the oil pan sump. That way the oil doesn't pour onto the inside of my belly pan. slight film of metallic dust on my Dimple Drain Plug... half way cleaned with a shop rag... cleaned magnetic drain... Quote:

I have a Dimple too!
Since I'm a very typical materialistic American, I have to buy stuff! The urge strikes me nearly everyday, so I do my part to keep the economy humming!
As far as the functionality of the Dimple, it hasn't had a significant or any accumulation of metal grit on it. I see that as a good sign. Perhaps in a newer engine it might pick something up, residuals material from manufacturing ? I would be worried if it picks up a lot of stuff. The dealer who voided the warranty due to the magnetic drain plug is just being a prick. I would challenge this, because there isn't anyway a passive device would damage the engine. BTW, Dimple claims their products are recommended by some car brands. Incidentally, my dealer installed my Dimple during an oil change. What he forgot to install was the access cover for the oil drain. He also forgot to properly install an engine cover and a rubber grommet when he replaced the injector on cylinder number two. Since the oil change was done over a year ago, I let them know I was unhappy, but I ordered a new cover and 6 plugs from ECS. It's a waste of time fighting with a moron dealer unless you have solid proof of their incompetence. |

Gotta say I still LOVE my Dimple drain plug. It works so much better than the UUC one.
