I just noticed in the German web site that the xdrive versions for 3 and 5 doors of M135i are finally included now. It is fun to play with that, so many options to choose from unlike 1M. Xdrives are claimed to be 0.2 sec. faster to 60 mph than both 1M and M135i/8 speed auto (factory says 4.7 to 100 km/h vs. 4.9 for rwd and auto box version, the same 4.9 for 1M). Chris Harris recently tested the rwd auto against the RS3 and found that the 0-60 comes a bit earlier than 4.5 secs which is on par with 1M tests (less weight and auto box helps the less powerful M135i). So, basically xdrives may be able to go 4.3 or so. However, they are considerably heavier than rwd versions, even heavier than the 1M (1515 kg. for 3 door, 1520 kg. 5 door without the driver vs. 1495 kg. for 1M; by comparison a 3 door M135i rwd with manual box weighs only 1425 kg. while the auto is 1440 kg.), this should ultimately affect both the handling and in gear performance negatively for the xdrive versions, so there are advantages and disadvantages to consider as always. Lastly, the xdrives come with sport auto gear box and sport variable stering, they are not available with manual. Could really be a great DD in its 5 door trim especially if you live somewhere with real winter conditions. 1M and M135i xdrive 5-door together in the garage should answer most of desires for most of us.

Thanks for the link. And just for clarification for people who may get confused, they did not pit these two cars against each other at the same time, it is rather 2011 1M Super-Test results and new M135i test results brought together.
Results are mostly like I was expecting, and whereever M135i gets really close to 1M or even betters it at few details, it is very likely down to tire difference (PSS vs PS2) like it is stated in the text. It is very interesting for example that the brakes in the hatch works superb at normal speeds but from 200 km/h to 0, there is a considerable difference to 1M's advantage 133.0 meters vs. 140,4 meters, which is a truck's length. The same observation applies to slalom/handling tests. Another detail is, in fact Sport Auto dynoed M135i with 340 ps and 493 nm at the crank and published it, so if we compare it with average dyno results for 1M (let's say around 360 ps and 550 nm) it is rather interesting that both are underrated at similar percentages and both weigh close to each other (1M even lighter with 7 kg.) despite BMW's claims that the hatch would be quite lighter than 1M. Despite tire disadvantage, at the relatively short Hockenheim track, lap difference of 1.6 seconds alone demonstrates how well the 1M suits to track duty compared to M135i with 8-speed auto. Horst von Saurma's 8.14.9 minutes Ring time for the 1M on the other hand remains arguable in my eyes but that's a whole other discussion.

The 37kg lift at the 1M's rear axle @ 200kmh got me a tad confused(vs 13kg for the M135i) Time to buy the CF rearspoiler or just keep the car theoretically(and irl) to the oversteery side of things

The drag of 1M is really an issue (petit but yes an issue) at speeds over 200 km/h or so, which lets for example an M3 or a Cayman etc. starts walking away after some point. The front actually creates down force but as you pointed out the rear has quite a lift which you can tell if you reach high speeds, it is not as planted as a E9X car, period. My old E90 330i was more stable after 200 km/h than my 1M. If you don't want a Moto GP type of wing (I don't) which may be the only real cure, than a combination of performance spoiler plus Revezport difuser and its undertray (ground effect panel they say) may help to stabilize the rear better. But there are no numerical data that I am aware of regarding both products.

Assuming that a rear wing is not feasible for most people, it would seem that one should install the BMW Performance trunk lid spoiler as well as bolting down at least a 45-lb weight on the floor of the trunk. Has anyone tried this? |

But it's not like you're going airbone beyond 130 mph in a stock 1M. Advevo in his performance rearspoiler equipped 1M and I did some 140/150mph stuff in Germany last sunday , both on 225/40 18 inch wobbly wintertyres but the cars both were stable enough.... 1M can do 272kmh on tacho (limited) , but it's not a straightline racer, 200/230kmh is fine for a while. No worries, no sweat. Cheers Robin |

M135i hatch v. M235i coupé:
http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=841450 Nice motoring machines. However, as 1M aficionado, the M2 will be the real deal IMHO.

The definitive M2 ! Forget about all the coupé rumors - after the unexpected success of the 1M, BMW M conceived the M2 in a way to take the pickup market by storm too.
