I did some research regarding wheels and tires, ever since i swapped out to the ProLine 17x7.5 ET45 wheels (they came with the car) and got new 225/45/17 all round, the car felt super agile, willing, faster and one can really "lean" on the tires in turns.
After some digging, those wheels are flow formed and weigh 8.5 kgs each, so they are 3 kgs lighter than the front 18x7.5s and 4 kgs+ lighter than the 18x8.5 style 261 wheels. This made more sense, since the whole car is down 6 kgs in the front and 8kgs in the rear (not including the heavier 18" tires). My plan was to get some used 17x8 cheap BMW wheels (style 32, 42 or 47) and track them, but those weigh in at 10.1 kgs to 10.3 kgs each. Weird that my current winter setup is lighter, so im seriously considering saving up for some Apex ARC-8 17x8.5 ET40s for the track (claimed weight 7.8kgs each) and maybe some OZ Ultraleggeras 17x8 ET40s for the street (8.1 kgs each). Something to think about, but those 17s really suit the E82 NA car very nicely, no wonder the car came in at 1,422 kgs when weighed. |

Took the tail lights off the car to hopefully dry them overnight.
A lot of water and ice inside. I'll try to seal the rubber flap on the lights against the car with some silicone. That seems to be the place were water is getting in when opening the trunk as it doesn't sit flush with the car. |

The gaskets look fine, the lights are only a month old. Thankfully the boot is dry. Definitely wouldn't want to get water in there so I'll keep checking.

Had a busy weekend; DC to PA, PA to NJ, NJ to NY, NY to NJ then back to DC lol. The drive back to DC was SUPER foggy!!
Somewhat related, got a new lens (Sigma 18-35 f1.8 ART) for my D7200 and figured out how to connect the camera to my phone via built-in wifi for editing, so my photo sharing game just went up a notch. Much easier than; Snap on camera, upload to PC, edit on PC, export edits, upload to flickr, post. 20181202_180641 by Matt Steele, on Flickr 20181202_181443 by Matt Steele, on Flickr 20181202_180204 by Matt Steele, on Flickr

Love the slight monochromatic look! I recently switched from an older Nikon DSLR to a Sony a7iii and just the ability to get photos directly to your phone after shooting is life changing.

Test fitted the universale brake pressure bleeder cap, since the shop that sold it to me was unsure if it would fit or not, fits perfectly.
Tomorrow will be M3 RSFBs (done carefully this time) with new ST 28mm front and 15mm rear sway bars (with their supplied poly bushings) and new Meyle HD end links front and back. As usual, all new bolts, nuts, washers etc will be installed. |

I recently replaced my front end links with the Meyle HD versions trying to track down front end noise that ended up being worn front strut mounts. I was pretty impressed with the build quality.

It really is awesome being able to manage the camera from my phone, can't wait to use it for freeing up space on trips too. It takes a while but I can back up my shots to my 512gb Note 9 LOL.

Installed 12mm (frt) and 15mm(rear) spacers on the 1. While for me it offers no performance gains, from a esthetics stand point, it's a great improvement! Having those wheels pushed enough to fill in the fender gap makes the car look sooo much better...

Its more of what did I do today to get a 1-series.
I googled this website when looking for a new BMW to replace my tired E46. Now I've been poking around and learning as much as I can. |

I was looking at getting something along the lines of E82 N52 engine. Those seem to be about the same power as the E46 and most reliable. Now comes the issue of finding one at a good price point near me! Quote:

Boy what a day...dentist appointment at 8:00 am just to make it to my 9:30 am reservation at the DIY workshop.
I just looked at the rear brake hardlines at the RSF, and i knew they will snap broken, even the shop owner looked at me and said "i really do not know, if they will snap or not". I checked local dealers online parts website, both lines are in stock...online. So i decided to go at the lines, and they both snapped without even exerting pressure. Took the shop owner's car (danke sehr nochmals!) spent 1 hour to the dealer and back, got the lines for €62 total. So, dropped the RSF, rear bushings came out no issues and went in just as easily. The fronts came out fine....but no matter how hard we tried, we could not drop the front low enough. We created some tools using a broken brake piston caliper spreader, cut it and squashed it between the SF and the chassis with some wood blocks, barely got enough clearance, but it worked. Now...repeat the same thing on the other side....i cursed so much in the shop (i never do that). They did not go in perfectly straight, and i had to wiggle them sideways and loosen them, the press them back in until they went in nearly flush. Finally....attempted to remove the rear sway bar....everything with rusted we could not undo the end link lower bolt due to space. Then i remembered someone from TKline suspension saying that the rear sway bar should be left alone, so i decided for now, leave it and we will do the front. It was already 17:30, so screw it. Re-attached the brake hardlines, fiddled like crazy to get those tiny heads into the hoses in that small space. Bled the system, all new bolts for SF, everything torqued down correctly, finally done. Drive on the way back was....really confident inspiring, the rear end is glued to the road, even in the wet, i didn't even realise i was taking corners at nearly 20kph speeds higher than i am used to. No noise, no vibrations, hitting bumps/potholes/uneven roads feels the same when the front end "hits" then as the rear end, unlike the stock slight bouncy feeling. Even my 125i with a software tune sees' a noticeable difference between stock and M3 RSFB. Everyone should do this, it is worth the headache and labour to do. My brake pedal feels mushy, but it is a simple re-bleed of the system and check for any leaks, i will do that Saturday at the DIY shop and go for the 20mm front sway bar and Meyle HD endlinks as well. I think the rear end needs nothing more than the bushings honestly. Sorry for the long post! but Chris, if your hardlines look bad, they will snap for sure. Mine looked "good" until i actually wanted to place a spanner on them and just felt like they will twist and they did just that. Get new ones and replace them! |
