Yeah, that's what I'm running now and it sounds good. I have DPs on order though, which is why I don't want to delete the resonator on the N55 mids. Thanks for the heads-up about Kleach. I didn't know that anybody else was running this setup, so I might ask him about how loud it'll be.

Performance Exhaust install on my N54...
So... I decided that the N55 mids just were not cutting it for me. I wanted a louder exhaust with more bass. While the N55 mids do make the exhaust louder... its more in the mid(freq) sound range than in the Bass tone. And only really at WOT(wide open throttle). I always was in love the first time I heard a PE in person.
I was afraid IF I installed the PE with the N55 mids... the exhaust would be way too loud. Plus I did not want to cut up my N55 mids... bc I thought I could sell them for a reasonable price and recoup some money. I also had listened to a lot of N54's with the PE(& y-pipe res delete) and I just LOVE that sound. I also love all the popes and crackles with the resonator delete of the PE. I did run into one little problem when I went to remove the copper nuts on the DP studs. They snapped CLEAN off! I did not even use a lot of torque! Then I came to find out that BMW does not sell those threaded studs separately! You can forget that at $2K per DP! lol So... I needed an ace dilyn torch to get those studs hot enough to use a 8mm punch and a sledge hammer. One note... maybe remove the engine lower cover... bc that red hot stud will shoot put when you hit it and it might melt your under tray!! Well... here are my pics... use the PE y-pipe as a template before using a hack saw to cut your mid pipe. two new clamps, and a rear exhaust muffler ring gasket come with the PE. You will need new DP/mid pipe gaskets though... Tq the PE exhaust clamps to 45Nm... TUV/EU conformity plate on y-pipe and rear exhaust muffler... when I went to loosen the N55 mid pipe... one of the M8 studs sheared off. I used plenty of Liquid Wrench and still it just snapped off!! Lucky for me my dealer was able to replace all four studs with stainless steel M8 bolts and copper nuts. sheared off copper nut with whats left of the M8 stud... seven month old N55 mids with OE rear muffler... new stainless steel M8 bolts M8 x 35mm with new copper exhaust nuts

That's weird. I spent a day hacking and drilling at one of my DP bolts trying to get it off and messed up the stud a little, but when I got a garage to heat the nut up with a torch it still came off without breaking the stud, and mine have never been undone. I'd have thought yours would have been ok if you only took them off 7 months ago! When I re-fitted the bolts I used copper grease to make them easier to remove next time.
I've now fitted the N55 mids with the PE cat back (without the y-pipe) and I prefer the sound now. |

Do you have a N54 or N55 135i? Any chance could you grab a sound clip I was debating on the same setup or just the axleback. Thanks.

I have an N54. With this setup it still pops and gurgles, but there is less bass/drone. I actually prefer it because I can hear the sound of the straight six again now. The y-pipe introduced too much bass which covered up that sound.
Will try to grab a clip, though it's largely pointless because most exhausts sound the same when they're recorded on a mobile phone and then played back on an iPad or laptop via YouTube. |

Sure, anything is possible. Just depends on how much you like crawling under the car.

Yes, this is easily possible on the driveway I'd say. Maybe even easier if it's only you doing it, as you can lie the pipes on yourself to hold them under the car whilst you fit things up. On a lift you'll need somebody to line the pipes up with the downpipes and bolt the bracket up whilst you hold the pipes up.

Hey Dackel, have your tried the N55 mids (with resonator) with the BMWP catback?
That's what I'm running now and it's a very nice sound. You still get the pops and gurgles - it's the catback that does that, not the res delete. |

No, I did not try it with my N55 mids. I reinstalled the N54 mids(with cats) and cut off the resonator - using the PE's y-pipe. My car never popped and crackled like it does now. I feel that most of that is due to the y-pipe resonator delete.

Nah, it's all the cat back! I had the N54 mids with y pipe delete, then I recently switched to N55 mids (without y pipe) and it still pops and gurgles the same as before!

I made a cold start video of my PE with my GoPro. Looks like my "other" cameras takes better video(and sound). Ohh well... enjoy - Dack

I seem to recall that there is a BMW factory midpipe available that has neither the Y-resonator, nor the secondary cats.
Does anyone have a link to where they sell that? Or a part number? |

Probably for certain country emission standards. They probably just said it was the same N54 as used before... so no new certification was needed. I think BMW pulled a fast one! We all know the 1M's engine is really a factory tuned engine. Different DME, different higher flowing cats and secondary cats, and it has the PPK hardware too. So its understandable that maybe BMW played with the rules a little bit!
